Embedded Hardware Systems Engineer

dormakaba is seeking a Hardware Engineer to join our Farpointe Data business in San Jose, California (hybrid). In this role, you'll take ownership of electronics throughout the full product lifecycle, from schematic design and PCB layout in Altium Designer through product validation, manufacturing, and production support. You'll also collaborate with external design partners, support new product introductions, manage sustaining engineering activities such as ECNs and component obsolescence, and troubleshoot hardware issues. This is a hands-on opportunity within a small team, working closely with operations and firmware engineers while seeing your work move quickly from design into production and make a meaningful impact on our products.

• Design and revise PCBs for access control readers and related products, including schematic capture, PCB layout, library management, and design release using Altium Designer
• Own component selection and BOM management, including approved parts, lifecycle status, second sources, PCN/EOL tracking, and ensuring designs are production-ready
• Lead and oversee external hardware design partners, including scoping and scheduling work, conducting design reviews, and reviewing and redlining schematics and layouts
• Support manufacturing and new product introduction, working with PCB fabricators and contract manufacturers on DFM, stack-ups, panelization, assembly documentation, pilot builds, production testing, and work instructions
• Manage engineering changes and product documentation, including ECNs, revision control, BOMs, fabrication and assembly drawings, and coordination with operations
• Bring up, validate, and troubleshoot hardware, including bench testing, design verification, root cause analysis, field and manufacturing issue resolution, and support for product compliance testing

• Bachelor's degree in Electrical Engineering, Electronics Engineering, or a related field
• 3+ years of hands-on electronics and PCB design experience, including hardware that has progressed into production
• Proficiency with Altium Designer, including schematic capture, PCB layout, library and footprint management, and design review
• Working knowledge of mixed-signal hardware design, including power supplies, regulators, microcontrollers, and interface circuits
• Experience with BOM and component management, including part selection, lifecycle and obsolescence management, approved vendor lists, and engineering change/revision control
• Hands-on manufacturing and lab experience, including DFM, production testing, test fixtures, lab instrumentation, and fine-pitch soldering/rework

• 5+ years of hands-on PCB and electronics hardware design experience, preferably with RF/radio hardware such as 125 kHz proximity, 13.56 MHz NFC/RFID, or Bluetooth, including antenna design, matching networks, and RF measurement
• Experience with product compliance and certification, including FCC Part 15/IC requirements and working with external test laboratories
• Experience managing external hardware design partners, including design houses or contractors, with the ability to review and provide technical direction on their work
• Familiarity with formal engineering processes and standards, including PLM/ERP systems, document control, and applicable IPC standards such as IPC-2221 and IPC-A-610
• Experience with physical product development, including reviewing STEP files for board fit, connector alignment, and enclosure clearance; experience with access control, security, or other regulated hardware products is a plus
