The Fairfax County Health Department is a progressive public health leader serving 1.2 million residents from diverse ethnic, cultural and economic backgrounds. Under general supervision, provides nutrition education, outreach, and services to the Fairfax community, with a focus on underserved areas and populations. Delivers targeted outreach, training, and educational initiatives that support healthier dietary choices. Collaborates with community stakeholders and county programs to expand access to nutrition information and resources. Assists Fairfax County residents in improving their health and nutrition by connecting them with appropriate services and educational opportunities. Identifies potential Women, Infants, and Children (WIC) clients and refers them to WIC and other relevant resources. Conducts nutrition assessments for WIC participants, identifies nutritional risks, and provides education to address those risks and support overall health and well-being. Issues WIC food benefits and tailors food packages as appropriate.

Employment Standards

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS: A bachelor's or higher degree in nutritional sciences, public health nutrition, dietetics or a related field from a regionally accredited college or university and satisfactorily completed a program of supervised clinical experience approved by the Commission on Dietetic Registration of the Academy of Nutrition and Dietetics; or related qualification requirements as defined by the Code of Virginia Chapter 27.1 of Title 54.1 Dietitians and Nutritionists.
CERTIFICATES AND LICENSES REQUIRED:
- Valid driver's license.
- AED certification (Required within 60 days).
- CPR certification (Required within 60 days).
NECESSARY SPECIAL REQUIREMENTS:
The appointee to this position will be required to complete a criminal background check, Child Protective Services Registry check, driving record check, and sanction screenings to the satisfaction of the employer.
This position is emergency/essential services personnel. (Required to report for duty during inclement weather and/or other emergencies.)
PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS:
- Possess credentialing requirements to be a Registered Dietitian through the Commission on Dietetic Registration.
- Previous experience as a WIC Nutritionist.
- Experience in nutrition and dietetics.
- Experience working in community-based public health nutrition programs with a focus on pregnant women, post-partum women, infants, and children
- Demonstrates excellent verbal and written communication skills, with an ability to establish and maintain collaborative connections with internal and external partners.
- Ability to work independently and on interdisciplinary teams.
- Proficiency in recordkeeping, utilizing electronic health records systems, and in the use of Microsoft Office software applications (Word and Excel) or other software applications.
- Ability to be proactive, exercise good judgment, use critical thinking skills, be organized and have excellent customer service skills.
- Ability to adapt to changes in a fast-paced environment.
PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS:
Job is generally sedentary in nature, and requires walking, standing, sitting (for long periods of time), and kneeling, reaching, bending, climbing stairs; may be required to lift or carry up to 25 lbs. as required for the position. Uses hands to grasp, handle, or feel. Visual acuity is required to read data from paper and on a computer monitor or other electronic device. Ability to operate keyboard driven equipment and computer and use of touchscreen. Position frequently communicates and must be able to exchange accurate information with others verbally and in writing. Generally, works in an office environment and may occasionally be required to perform job duties outside of the typical office setting. Ability to drive a motor vehicle. All duties performed with or without reasonable accommodations.
