Correctional Health Services, one of the largest county jail healthcare systems in the nation, is seeking an Addictionologist for an exciting opportunity to work with incarcerated, addicted individuals. The Addictionologist will work within an interdisciplinary team to provide integrated health care to patients navigating the judicial system. They will lead the development and expansion of Substance use treatments offered within the Maricopa County jail setting. The Addictionologist will have the opportunity to impact people when they are at their most difficult times, giving this physician a unique ability to make substantial positive change in the lives of incarcerated individuals, their families, and the community.

We Require

  • Doctoral degree in Medicine (MD or DO)

  • Completed an accredited Residency Program in Family Medicine, Internal Medicine, Psychiatry, Emergency Medicine, or other accredited Residency Program

WITH

  • An Addiction certification by one of the following boards or their equivalent:

    • The American Board of Preventive Medicine (ABPM)

    • The American Osteopathic Association (AOA)

    • The American Board of Psychiatry and Neurology (ABPN)

    • The American Board of Addiction Medicine (ABAM)

OR

  • Five or more years of working with a strong focus on Addiction Medicine may be approved to substitute for certification

OR

  • Completion of a Fellowship in addiction medicine and two years of experience practicing in addiction medicine or direct care may be approved to substitute for certification

Job Contributions

  • Develop and implement CHS Policies, Standard Operating Procedures, and Clinical Practice Guidelines related to prevention, screening, intervention, and treatment of patients with Substance Use Disorders under the direction of the Chief Medical Officer in collaboration with the Clinical Manager of Addiction Medicine

  • Evaluate patients with addiction disorders and provide appropriate evidence-based treatments, including, but not limited to, managing withdrawal symptoms and providing Medication for Opioid Use Disorder MOUD where indicated

  • Recognize, evaluate, and treat the psychiatric and physical complications of addiction, while working collaboratively with medical, mental health, psychiatric, and re-entry teams in an integrated approach to the whole patient

  • Manage a caseload of patients with SUD to refine diagnoses and treatments as indicated

  • Document evaluation, treatment, and other patient interactions clearly and thoroughly, and in compliance with established CHS workflows, Standard Operating Procedures, and in accordance with licensure and accreditation requirements

  • Help coordinate the transfer of care of SUD patients back into the community upon release

  • Keep abreast of changes in laws regarding illegal substances, the prescribing of controlled substances, criminalization of behaviors associated with substance use, and clinical alternatives to criminal prosecution and incarceration

  • Provide guidance, training, and consultation related to Substance Use disorders for other Addiction team members as well as other CHS clinical staff, CHS administration, MCSO staff and administration, and county leadership as needed

  • Maintain licensure, certifications, and other credentialing as indicated

  • Assist CHS with preparation for licensure and accreditation surveys

  • Other duties as assigned by the Chief Medical Officer or designee within the scope of employment

Working Conditions

  • Ability to work inside a jail and stand, walk, and bend for extended periods of time throughout the shift while accurately handling a high volume of work, communicating with a culturally diverse patient population, and adapting to frequent changes, interruptions, and unscheduled tasks

  • Position includes day or night shift work, which may include weekends and holidays

  • Traveling or floating to various clinical locations is required within a 5-mile radius

  • Must be able to respond to emergencies and maintain CPR certification with the ability to get on the floor to perform CPR/chest compressions, push medical equipment, climb stairs, and lift patients on a gurney

  • Must be able to pass a fingerprint background check and maintain MCSO jail access

  • Valid, unrestricted license to practice medicine issued by the Arizona Medical Board or by the board of another state, with the ability to obtain an Arizona license, is required upon hire

  • Current CPR Certification is required upon hire

  • Current DEA Certification is required upon hire

  • Current Controlled Substance Dispensing License is required upon hire
