Currently recruiting Central Sterile Supply Technicians (SPD) to provide sterile processing support services at Naval Medical Center San Diego in San Diego, California. Services will be provided Monday through Friday, with coverage between 6: 00 a.M. And 5: 59 a.M., based on department needs, with coverage mostly needed during nights. Shifts will normally be scheduled as 8-hour shifts with a 30-minute unpaid lunch break, or four 10-hour shifts with a 60-minute unpaid lunch break. Typical shift coverage may include PM shifts such as 12: 45 p.M. To 10: 45 p.M. Or 2: 45 p.M. To 10: 45 p.M., and night shifts such as 8: 45 p.M. To 6: 45 a.M. This is an opportunity to support surgical readiness and patient care in a military medical center environment.
DUTIES OF THE CENTRAL STERILE SUPPLY TECHNICIAN (SPD):
- Receive, disassemble, and inspect reusable medical devices and surgical instrumentation for damage.
- Receive and dispose of regulated medical waste, general waste, and soiled linen.
- Comply with OSHA regulations governing the wearing of personal protective equipment while working in the decontamination area.
- Determine the correct method of decontamination, including removal of blood, tissue fragments, body fluids, and other contaminants.
- Perform decontamination methods including wiping, soaking, rinsing, scrubbing, and using ultrasonic and washer decontamination or sterilizer equipment.
- Examine all items after decontamination and pre-sterilization procedures to ensure contaminants have been removed and instruments function properly.
- Ensure that all medical devices and surgical instrumentation are properly labeled and identified.
- Assemble and prepare the full range of specialty trays and instrument sets.
- Select correct wrapping or packaging materials for medical devices and surgical instrument sets.
- Select and apply sterilization processes in accordance with standard military treatment facility procedures, including Ethylene Oxide (ETO) or steam sterilization.
- Correctly label, seal, wrap, or place items in rigid containers with appropriate chemical indicator tape.
- Aerate gas-sterilized items for the required period of time.
- Receive sterilized trays, sets, and equipment from the sterilizer and check for integrity of sterilization, including indicator changes and package condition.
- Stock and properly store sterile items in the sterile storage room in accordance with facility procedures.
- Perform decontamination, inspection, assembly, sterilization, storage, and distribution of surgical instruments and trays.
- Perform equipment testing and documentation related to sterile processing functions.
- Comply with sterilization and infection control standards.
- Coordinate with operating room staff to ensure instrument readiness.
- Work PM, overnight, and rotating shifts as required.
QUALIFICATIONS OF THE CENTRAL STERILE SUPPLY TECHNICIAN (SPD):
- Certificate required.
- Must have completed a central sterile supply training course.
- Must have current certification by the International Association of Healthcare Central Service Materiel Management or current certification by the National Institute of Health Care Sterile Processing and Distribution Personnel.
- Must have at least one year of experience within the last two years as a Central Sterile Supply Technician.
- Must be able to work PM, overnight, and rotating shifts as required.
- Must be able to complete required health, immunization, tuberculosis, and Hepatitis B screening requirements before providing services.
- Must be able to complete required background/security processes for access to a Navy and Defense Health Agency medical facility.
- Must be a U.S. Citizen for access to U.S. Government networks.
- Must comply with all applicable facility policies, procedures, training, safety, infection control, and documentation requirements.
