- Earned doctorate in Child Development, Early Childhood Education, Human Development and Family Studies (HDFS) or closely related eld by July 31, 2027 (ABD will be considered for the first year of this position with a reduction in rank and salary (see details below).
- Evidence of at least three years of experience working with children and families in community or educational settings

Candidates must demonstrate:
- Evidence of university-level teaching experience at the undergraduate and/or graduate level, in child and family studies, early childhood education, or a closely related field;
- Evidence of potential for an active research agenda related to child and family studies, early childhood education, or a closely related field, including at least one peer-reviewed publication;
We are looking for candidates who bring expertise in at least
TWO of the additional following areas (in terms of teaching and/or research). Please explicitly identify and discuss at least
TWO areas in your letter of interest:
- Expertise in child development from birth through adolescence, including variations in development.
- Expertise in family dynamics and parenting, including parent-child interactions and the influence of families on children's development.
- Expertise in evidence-based instruction, methods instruction, and meaning-making across various content areas in early childhood education.
- Evidence of expertise in designing and enacting early childhood STEAM instruction that addresses the needs of diverse learners.
- Evidence of teaching prekindergarten and/or kindergarten in an educational setting.
- Evidence of experience and expertise with early childhood teacher preparation, clinical supervision (in-person and online), and/or community/school-based partnerships.

| Description of the Department or Unit |
The
Reich College of Education offers a broad range of comprehensive degree programs: Baccalaureate, Masters, Specialist and Doctoral levels as well as programs leading to certication and licensure. The college seeks to provide a well-balanced program of classroom and clinical experiences while maintaining a cooperative, forward-thinking posture, with emphasis on excellence in teaching, learning, research, scholarship, and outreach. This position resides in the Department of Child Development, Literacy and Special Education which offers innovative programs focusing on all facets of child development, reading, writing, language, and specic areas of special education. The department is affiliated with the
Anderson Reading Clinic, the
Lucy Brock Child Development Lab, the
Scholars with Diverse Abilities Program, and the Special Education
Mathematics Clinics - Adapted and General Curriculum. Additional information on the department and college can be found on the program website

The
Child Development and Education (CDE) program resides in the Department of Child Development, Literacy, and Special Education (
CLS), which is one of five departments in the Reich College of Education (
RCOE). The Child Development and Education (
CDE) program prepares students in the areas of Child Development and Birth through Kindergarten teacher education. There are currently 8 full-time faculty. The program serves approximately 80 majors in Child Development: Child and Family Science and 80 majors in Birth through Kindergarten Education. The program also collaborates with the Lucy Brock Child Development Lab (
LBCDL), a Reggio-inspired program that uses an emergent curriculum.
LBCDL serves approximately 94 children and their families in three on-campus classrooms and two NC PreK classrooms in the public schools.
The Child Development and Education program offers the following degrees and certificate:
- Bachelor of Science degree in Child Development (non-licensure) with a concentration in Child and Family Science (non-licensure). Offered face-to-face.
- Bachelor of Science degree in Child Development with a concentration in Birth Through Kindergarten Education (with BK teacher licensure), Offered face-to-face and online.
- Graduate Certificate Program: Graduate Certificate in Birth through Kindergarten (with teacher licensure). Offered online.

| Essential Duties and Responsibilities |
The duties include teaching, research, and service. Specically, faculty will:
- Engage in work consistent with Appalachian State University's Strategic Plan 2022-2027.
- Teach undergraduate and graduate courses in-person and online across the child development and education curriculum, including courses with field-based experiences at the Boone campus and connected field-based sites;
- Teach, mentor, and collaborate with students, in-service teachers/practitioners, and doctoral students;
- Actively engage in scholarly work;
- Actively engage with teachers and students in our laboratory school and clinical settings (Academy at Middle Fork; Lucy Brock Child Development Lab, Anderson Reading Clinic) and/or other field-based sites;
- Maintain a visible presence on campus;
- Engage in service to the program, department, college, university, and profession;
- Collaborate with colleagues in the program, department, and university;
- Serve on and chair doctoral committees

| ABD Description |
ABD with reduction in rank and salary:
ABD will be considered for this position. Evidence of successful defense of the dissertation must be received by July 31 for a fall hire or November 30 for a spring hire. If confirmation of defense is not provided by the deadline, the candidate will receive a new one-year fixed-term contract and be hired at the rank of Instructor. The candidate's salary will also be reduced to a lower rate commensurate with other full-time instructors in the same department. However, if degree verification is provided before the end of the one-year fixed-term contract, the candidate will be returned to the rank of assistant professor with commensurate compensation beginning July 1 of the following academic year.
No ABD consideration: Only candidates with an earned doctorate or terminal degree from an accredited institution will be considered for the position. Since
ABD will not meet the minimum requirements,
ABD will not be considered. |
