San Diego Zoo Wildlife Alliance is an international, nonprofit conservation organization with two front doors: the San Diego Zoo and the San Diego Zoo Safari Park. We integrate wildlife health and care, science, and education to develop sustainable conservation solutions.

HOW YOU WILL IMPACT OUR MISSION The Pathology Fellow performs all job assignments with a positive attitude that supports San Diego Zoo Wildlife Alliance's mission and vision of saving species worldwide by uniting our expertise in wildlife care and conservation science with our dedication to inspiring passion for nature and leading the fight against extinction. The Pathology Fellow performs a variety of assigned pathology activities, while working toward a graduate degree. This is a one-year position renewable for a maximum of two years. This position reports to the Director of Disease Investigations.

WHAT YOU WILL DO



  • Conducts and oversees gross necropsy examinations and tissue sample collections.
  • Interprets clinical cytology specimens and laboratory analysis findings.
  • Prepares reports and presents findings to clinical veterinarians.
  • Keeps abreast of research and published literature.
  • Presents documentation in the form of an external presentation or publication.



WHAT WE ARE LOOKING FOR


The fellowship offers unique opportunities for development of diagnostic skills in anatomic pathology of nondomestic species and investigative experience using pathology and molecular diagnostics for wildlife health. Primary responsibilities of the fellow will include gross and histopathologic examinations of free-ranging California wildlife as well as record keeping and communication with stakeholders on mortality investigations. Other expectations and opportunities include necropsy on a variety of zoo-based species, mentorship of pathology residents and veterinary student externs, and collaborative research with clinical veterinarians and conservation scientists. This position requires possession of current rabies and measles vaccination, and satisfactory completion of a Tuberculosis (TB) Test.

JOB EXPERIENCE



  • Residency in veterinary pathology



EDUCATION AND CERTIFICATIONS



  • D.V.M. or equivalent degree
  • Eligibility or certification by the American College of Veterinary Pathologists



SKILLS AND KNOWLEDGE



  • Necropsy examinations and tissue sample collections
  • Anatomic pathology through gross and microscopic examination
  • Use word processing and database systems
  • Make presentations

The posted salary range represents the full compensation potential for this role over time. Initial hiring offers are typically made within the lower to mid portion of the range and are based on a combination of relevant experience, skills, qualifications, internal equity, and organizational considerations. Placement near the top of the range is generally reserved for individuals who demonstrate sustained performance, growth, and expanded responsibilities in the role over time.
