Job Details:
The Mercer University School of Medicine (MUSM) Dean's Office seeks an Associate Dean to serve as campus leadership in Valdosta, Georgia.

The selected candidate is expected to understand, promote and strongly support the mission of the School of Medicine. For over thirty years, MUSM has focused on training medical students to fulfill its mission of preparing healthcare professionals to meet the primary care and health care needs of rural and underserved Georgia residents and communities. Emphasizing interactive and problem-based teaching strategies, our student-centered faculty provides a conceptual and practical foundation that equips graduates to serve the state of Georgia and those in most need in this state. Through teaching, scholarship, and service, students and faculty work closely to have local, regional, national, and international impact.

Candidates must:
  • Hold a terminal degree in the health sciences. Candidates with an M.D. are preferred.
  • Prior assistant, associate dean, or executive level experience in a medical school or academic center, with excellence in major educational leadership including, but not limited to, roles associated with higher education leadership, curriculum management, faculty recruitment and development, LCME accreditation and graduate education.
  • Ability to manage a major unit of the medical school and provide supervision of faculty, curriculum, & accreditation at all three MUSM campus locations.
  • Demonstrated ability to provide leadership and to work collaboratively with other units within the medical school and university-wide to support the mission of the medical school.
  • Strong interpersonal, communication and problem-solving skills.
  • Demonstrated ability to work successfully with faculty and school leadership.
  • Ability to mentor faculty and staff.
  • Ability to think strategically and guide initiatives that will promote faculty development and stature.
  • Ability to think creatively in developing novel opportunities for faculty and staff at varying career stages.
  • Commitment to practices that foster diversity, inclusion and equity.


The ideal candidate will have:
  • Experience with faculty governance, development and implementation of policy, procedures and bylaws; supervision of faculty; oversight of the curriculum; oversight of accreditation.
  • Experience managing the appointment and promotion processes; Overseeing the campus faculty; assisting with the faculty appointment process for the School of Medicine; serving as a resource to and advocate for faculty engaged in promotion and/or tenure process, including CV and application review and feedback.
  • Experience with accreditation and commitment to lead the school's LCME accreditation process and maintain LCME accreditation standards at all times. Experience with Continuous Quality Improvement.
