Job Description

The Student Affairs department at the UMKC School of Medicine is seeking an experienced Learning Resource Specialist. This position is responsible for assisting first and second-year medical students in a combined BA/MD program through individual coaching, specifically in study skills and test-taking strategies for a rigorous science curriculum. These students matriculate directly from high school into the program, requiring support tailored to learners transitioning immediately into an accelerated college and medical education environment.

Duties and Responsibilities

Strategic Leadership

  • Work with individual course directors to be familiar with course content and structure for the purpose of providing optimum academic support to students.
  • Participate in the development and implementation of a proactive system with departments of the school of medicine to address the academic needs of incoming and current students in years 1 and 2 classes.
  • Develop and deliver learning resources and educational programing
    • Plan and implement workshops covering topics such as diverse study methods, time management, test preparation, and test-taking etc.
    • Maintain a list of peer tutors for the School of Medicine and disperse to student body
    • Interface with current academic support resources at UMKC and facilitate their use by year 1 and 2 medical students

Operational Leadership

  • Monitor academic performance of year 1 and 2 students and conduct proactive outreach to the student, their academic advisor and faculty as needed.
  • Provide individualized academic counseling and coaching
    • Meet students to develop effective study habits, time management strategies, and test-taking approaches.
    • Support students experiencing academic challenges, remediation, or transitional stress.

Knowledge, Skills and Abilities

  • Excellent interpersonal, intercultural, and communication skills for relational engagement across a diverse population of students with varying learning and support needs.
  • Self-motivated and team oriented
  • Strong organizational skills
  • Ability to implement deadlines and hold students accountable
  • Proficient computer skills and able to work with multiple data systems
Minimum Qualifications

A bachelor's degree in a related field or an equivalent combination of education and experience from which comparable knowledge and abilities can be acquired is necessary, as well as three years of experience in a related program or field.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Master's degree in Higher Education, Curriculum and Instruction, Counseling, Education, or related field preferred, as well as two years of experience working within academic support.
  • At least two years of experience providing academic support/counseling
    • Academic Counseling is defined as the process between the student and an academic counselor to discuss academic difficulties and to help the student acquire more effective and efficient abilities in areas such as study skills, reading skills, and/or test-taking skills.
  • Candidates will need proficient computer skills and be able to work within multiple data systems.
Anticipated Hiring Range

The anticipated hiring range for this position has been established as $53,976 - $58,000 annually

Salary is determined by a variety of factors, including but not limited to, the individual's particular combination of education, skills, and experience, as well as organizational requirements.
