About the Department
The Department of Animal Science is leading the transformation of agriculture, biomedical research, and animal management worldwide. Our mission is to ignite passion and expertise in Animal Sciences through pioneering research, education, and outreach. Animal Science is the largest academic program in the College of Agriculture and Life Sciences and provides instruction to over 900 undergraduate students and 70 graduate students. The Department is a leader in extension and engagement programs to farmers, allied industry and the public, and conducts internationally recognized research into nutrition, genetics, reproduction, health and management of domesticated animals.

The position will benefit from NC State's Lake Wheeler Field Laboratory located in Raleigh and an additional eighteen research stations and three field laboratories across the state. These modern research facilities include two farrow to finish swine herds, six cow-calf herds from the mountains to the coastal plain, beef feed lots, three dairies, two sheep flocks, meat goats, and horses. The Feed Mill Education Unit and additional animal research facilities are available to support research, teaching and extension programs. Animal Agriculture accounts for three- fourths of North Carolina farm receipts and the state offers excellent opportunities for collaborations with progressive industry scientists and producers.

Essential Job Duties
The Department of Animal Science seeks a candidate for a 9-month tenure-track Assistant Professor position to build a robust research program focused on nutritional biochemistry and metabolism of animals, with a strong interest in livestock species. The position effort split is 20% academic and 80% research. Preference will be given to candidates with proposed or established research programs in animal nutrition emphasizing gastrointestinal health, immunology, endocrinology, nutrigenomics, metabolomics, gastrointestinal microbiology, digestive physiology, or muscle biology.

Responsibilities

  • Establish a sustainable and nationally recognized research program supported primarily by competitive federal funding, engaging departmental core competencies in animal nutrition, health, reproduction, genetics, and production
  • Support the Interdepartmental Graduate Program in Nutrition and the Food Animal Initiative (foodanimal.ncsu.edu)
  • Teach at least one core graduate-level nutrition course each year (e.g., ANS/BCH571 Regulation of Metabolism, ANS/NTR 706 Vitamin Metabolism, ANS/NTR 708 Energy Metabolism, ANS/NTR 775 Mineral Metabolism, or other graduate-level nutrition courses)
  • Support cross-disciplinary integration with the Interdepartmental Nutrition Graduate Program (involving Food, Bioprocessing and Nutrition Sciences, and Prestage Department of Poultry Science), as well as the CVM and PSI

  • Other tasks and responsibilities may be assigned based on the needs of the organization and evolving priorities.


Qualifications






Minimum Education and Experience

  • Ph.D. degree in animal science or a relevant field by the start date
  • Research emphasis on nutritional biochemistry and metabolism of animals, with a strong interest in livestock species
  • Commitment to teaching and mentoring students

Other Required Qualifications

  • Demonstrated ability to publish research in peer-reviewed journals
  • Potential to develop an extramurally funded research program

Preferred Qualifications

  • Strong interpersonal and communication skills with a proven ability to collaborate effectively within a collegial, team-oriented environment
  • Post-doctoral research experience
