This is a Contract position until June 2027. This appointment may be extended or converted to career status based on the needs of the department.

DESCRIPTION

Consistently ranked among the top graduate theatre training programs in the country, UC San Diego's Department of Theatre & Dance offers undergraduate degrees, MFA degrees in Acting, Dance, Directing, Design (Costume, Lighting, Scenic, Sound), Stage Management, and Playwriting, and a PhD in Theatre and Drama. The Theatre & Dance department also shares a close relationship with the Tony Award winning La Jolla Playhouse, where MFA candidates are provided professional residencies.

Under supervision, assist in the technical event management of the Department of Theatre and Dance facilities producing 15 events annually. Perform full duties for various recurring instructional and public events including set-up, operation, and strike of productions. Responsible for technical supervision, production and event logistics for 15 recurring events annually. Duties also include assisting or facilitating the maintenance and repair of production equipment at the Mandell Weiss Shops and the Department of Theatre and Dance facilities. Assist with all produced events as needed, including work calls, set-up and strike. Responsible for audience and crew safety related to personal injury prevention and adherence to fire regulations.

Must work a varying schedule. Programming in the facility necessitates a different work schedule each week, including evenings and weekends. Must have reliable transportation.

QUALIFICATIONS
  • Mastery level knowledge of technical aspects of at least one production area such as lighting, sound, video, costumes, hair / make-up, properties, scenery, scenic treatment, etc.

  • Professional knowledge of systems and equipment used to stage public events, including lighting, audio, and projection systems.

  • Strong knowledge of theatrical safety and security requirements to ensure audience and staff safety in the building.

  • Ability to set-up, use, and maintain a theatrical equipment repair work area, including basic use and maintenance of tools, test gear, etc.

  • Strong ability to direct technical aspects of an event in a timely manner as described by students, faculty, or staff, often with competing deadlines under pressure of public performance.

  • Strong ability to provide close supervision to stage crew working in various theatrical disciplines.

  • Good working knowledge / skills in basic financial administration.

  • Good verbal and interpersonal communication skills to communicate complex instructions and information to disparate constituencies.

  • Good problem recognition, avoidance and resolution skills.

  • Excellent communication skills, including the ability to clearly formulate ideas when talking to event presenters, stage crew, and members of the public.

PREFERRED:

  • Good working knowledge of the University and collective bargaining policies, practices, rules, regulations, etc., including safety rules and regulations.

Pay Transparency Act

Annual Full Pay Range: $60,300 - $103,900 (will be prorated if the appointment percentage is less than 100%)

Hourly Equivalent: $28.88 - $49.76

Factors in determining the appropriate compensation for a role include experience, skills, knowledge, abilities, education, licensure and certifications, and other business and organizational needs. The Hiring Pay Scale referenced in the job posting is the budgeted salary or hourly range that the University reasonably expects to pay for this position. The Annual Full Pay Range may be broader than what the University anticipates to pay for this position, based on internal equity, budget, and collective bargaining agreements (when applicable).
