Description

Brown and Caldwell (BC), a leading environmental engineering firm, is currently seeking a Staff Engineer to assist a regional utility company with right of way and easement acquisition.

The Staff Engineer role supports senior engineers by performing basic tasks and coordination. The role assists a regional utility company in their land department with data collection, GIS support and easement preparation, gaining foundational experience in various civil-specific elements of utility infrastructure projects. This role is crucial in ensuring that facts, policies, and practices related to the job are clearly explained and followed.

This position is based out of our El Paso, TX office.

Responsibilities



  • Support in planning, design, and creation of civil engineering plans, specifications, and reports.
  • Conduct basic site investigations and assessments of existing conditions for project sites.
  • Participate in Subsurface Utility Engineering (SUE) fieldwork.
  • Conduct a desktop review of publicly available data to assess site constraints, utility availability, and environmental impacts.
  • Identify and confirm compliance with relevant codes, laws, and permits to ensure regulatory adherence in all tasks performed.
  • Prepare and review existing conditions base mapping.
  • Assist with the preparation of linear alignments.
  • Assist in the development of the following design elements:

    • Site planning
    • Paving and grading
    • Stormwater management
    • Yard piping and utilities


  • Support the creation of the following design documentation:

    • Demolition Plans
    • Construction phasing, staging, and access plans
    • Site, paving, grading, and drainage plans
    • Yard piping and utility plans
    • Temporary and permanent erosion and sediment control plans
    • Stormwater management calculations and reports
    • Parking and vehicle access calculations


  • Help in the creation and drafting of the following specifications:

    • Temporary erosion and sediment control
    • Existing conditions
    • Demolition
    • Earthwork
    • Exterior improvements
    • Utilities


  • Support collection of vendor data
  • Support senior engineers with construction phase services, including the following:

    • Request for Information (RFI) responses
    • Submittal reviews
    • Change order directives


  • Flexibility to adapt and execute various additional assignments based on evolving needs.


Skills and Competencies



  • Familiarity with geotechnical investigations and recommendations to determine how they impact site elements.
  • Familiarity with survey data and historic record drawings to determine site constraints.
  • Strong understanding and application of basic civil engineering concepts.
  • Excellent problem-solving skills, particularly in providing well-defined solutions to routine problems.
  • Proficiency in using software and tools relevant to civil engineering tasks.
  • Ability to follow set procedures and guidelines diligently.


Experience



  • Typically, 0-2 years of related work experience in civil engineering or related field.
  • Has passed or is working towards passing the Fundamentals of Engineering exam required for Engineer-in-Training registration.
  • Encouraged to certify in BC's Subject Matter Specialist (SMS) Framework in the first six months of being in the role.


Preferred Experience



  • Good map reading skills to interpret maps and plans, and property records.
  • Ability to research available databases and records for determining property ownership and securing records.
  • Good document management skills to handle a large number of documents and processes at all stages of a project.
  • Analyze alternative approaches and offer solutions that are agreeable to all involved.
  • Strong communication skills with the ability to negotiate with property owners for the acquisition of land rights.
  • Ability to work both independently and in large, coordinated teams.
  • Ability and willingness to perform fieldwork at various sites.
  • Knowledge of standard software including MS Office, Outlook, and Bluebeam.


Education



  • A bachelor's degree in civil engineering or related field, or equivalent experience is required.


Salary Range: The anticipated starting pay range for this position is based on the employee's primary work location and may be more or less depending upon skills, experience, and education. These ranges may be modified in the future.

Location A: $64,000 - $87,000
