Job Summary

A Middle School Sports Official is responsible for enforcing sport-specific rules, ensuring games start and remain on schedule, and helping provide a safe, fair, and positive environment for participants in grades 68. Officials may work Middle School Basketball, Volleyball, Flag Football, or other youth sports programs through Milwaukee Recreation. Availability for evenings and/or Saturdays is required depending on the sport season and league schedule.

Position Summary

  • Administer and enforce sport-specific rules, policies, and regulations.
  • Arrive at assigned sites at least 15 minutes prior to scheduled game times.
  • Maintain game schedules and time limits established by the Youth Sports Office.
  • Demonstrate professionalism in appearance, attitude, communication, and conduct.
  • Model positive sportsmanship and appropriate behavior for players, coaches, and spectators.
  • Communicate effectively with Milwaukee Recreation staff, coaches, participants, and patrons.
  • Exercise sound judgment and make timely decisions during games and challenging situations.
  • Report special incidents, concerns, or issues to the Youth Sports Supervisor.
  • Assist with basic site setup and breakdown as needed.
  • Maintain a safe and organized environment for all participants.
  • Follow all Milwaukee Public Schools, Milwaukee Recreation, and Part-Time Employee Manual policies and procedures.
  • Attend required trainings and meetings.
  • Confirm or decline assignments in a timely manner.
  • Perform additional duties as assigned by the Youth Sports Supervisor or Building Director.
Job Requirements

  • General knowledge of Basketball, Volleyball, Flag Football, or other applicable sport rules and regulations.
  • Ability to work evenings and/or Saturdays based on seasonal scheduling needs.
  • Ability to remain calm, fair, and professional in stressful situations.
  • Strong communication and interpersonal skills.
  • Positive, team-oriented, and service-focused attitude.
  • Ability to work effectively with diverse youth populations, staff, coaches, and community members.
  • Reliable transportation.
  • Ability to attend all mandatory trainings and meetings.
  • Ability to stand, walk, climb stairs, and supervise activities for extended periods of time.
  • Ability to work in gymnasiums, outdoor fields, or similar recreational environments with possible exposure to loud noises and varying weather conditions.
  • Ability to assist with site setup and breakdown as needed.
  • Ability to supervise and assist youth participants, including accommodating participants with disabilities within the scope of provided training.
Preferred Experience

  • Previous officiating or youth sports experience.
  • WIAA certification in Basketball, Volleyball, Flag Football, or other applicable sports. (not required)
  • CPR/First Aid/AED certification.
  • Previous experience working in recreation, education, athletics, or other public-facing settings.
  • Advanced knowledge of sport-specific rules and mechanics.
Working Environment

This environment includes walking, climbing, standing for long periods of time, and possible loud noises when exposed to activities in the gym or similar environment. Staff will be required to supervise groups of children and adults as well as assist in the accommodation of children and/or adults with disabilities (within parameters of provided training).
