Summer Camp (Billiken Recess Day Camp) Group Leader/Camp
Counselor
The Summer Camp (Billiken Recess Day Camp) Group Leader/Camp Counselor role is critical
to the successful implementation of our Summer Youth Camp program for the following
reasons:
1. Participant Safety and Risk Management
* Camp counselors provide direct supervision of youth participants throughout the day
* Activities such as swimming, field trips, and sports require close monitoring to mitigate
risk
* Maintaining appropriate staff-to-camper ratios is essential to comply with best practices
and institutional expectations for youth programming
2. Program Delivery and Quality
* Counselors are responsible for planning and leading daily activities aligned with weekly
themes
* The variety of programming (arts, recreation, educational components) requires
dedicated staff to ensure engagement and age-appropriate experiences
* High-quality programming supports participant satisfaction and strengthens the
reputation of SLU's youth programs
3. Operational Efficiency
* The extended daily hours and multiple activity areas require multiple staff members to
manage transitions, set up programming, and supervise concurrent activities
* Counselors assist with logistics including field trips, lunch supervision, and all-camp
events
* PRN staff provide critical flexibility for before/after care coverage and staffing gaps
where we don't have SLU student workers
4. Customer Service and Community Engagement

Staff serve as primary points of contact for campers and their families, requiring
professionalism and strong communication
* Positive camper experiences support retention and repeat enrollment, which contributes
to the financial sustainability of the program
* The program strengthens SLU's connection to both campus families and the broader St. Louis community.
