Design Build - Vice President / Principal-in-Charge

Role Description: Huitt-Zollars has a great full-time opportunity for a Design Build - Vice President/Principal-in-charge in our Dallas office. The Design Build Principal-In-Charge (PIC) will be responsible identifying major alternative delivery projects to pursue, vetting teaming partners (both Contractors and Consultants), negotiating teaming agreements and contract teams, and all pursuit activities. Project execution responsibilities will include leading project work plan, contract management, staff management/utilization, quality control, client service, utilization of staff, and project profitability for lump sum design-build projects contracted to a design-build contractor.

Location: Dallas / Fort Worth, Texas preferred; other locations with Huitt-Zollars Office will be considered

Registration: Professional Licensed Engineer (PE)

Education: Bachelor's Degree in Civil Engineering (BSCE)

Duties:

  • Minimum of 15 years of transportation/federal design experience.
  • Minimum of 10 years of demonstrated experience in the role of Project Manager/Deputy Project Manager/Major Task Lead for transportation/federal design-build projects, preferably larger than $500M.
  • Bachelor's degree in Civil Engineering from an accredited college/university.
  • Licensed as a Professional Engineer (PE).
  • Demonstrated Quality Control / Quality Assurance experience.
  • Demonstrated team building and verbal/oral skills.
  • Experience with Risk Management Plans & claims mitigation.
  • Impeccable financial management abilities.
  • Ability and willingness to travel for work as needed.
  • Able to foster collaboration between technical and management teams working from other locations.
  • Well-developed communications skills: ability to clearly and concisely express project issues and analysis as it pertains to business and technical concerns to executive management, commercial and finance colleagues, technical colleagues and peers.
  • Self-driven and resourceful to achieve goals independently and in groups.
  • Flexibility to adjust and thrive in an environment with changing requirements, schedules, and priorities.
  • Demonstrated ability to creatively solve complex issues.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Takes active steps in the pursuit of winning new business or additional opportunities with existing clients and may be responsible for a stated portion of office sales goal. Assists and/or leads team in pursuit of new work (repeat work, SOQ and Proposals). Develops and/or executes project Win strategy.
  • Successfully and consistently functions as Lead Principal-in-Charge for their designated Practice Area in geographic market.
  • Competent, knowledgeable, service leader in the market(s) they service.
  • Understands and follows HZ QMS and Quality initiatives. Ensures quality control measures are being adhered to on projects and daily operations.
  • Prepares and follows comprehensive Project Framework Instructions and proper work planning for a project. Ensures proper staff is assigned and utilized on their projects.
  • Reviews project reports and performance metrics to track project progress and budget. Leads successful projects (profit, on-schedule, quality, satisfied client). Verifies client satisfaction routinely and shares feedback with team.
  • Proactively works with PM to strategize resolving issues that impact project performance. Reviews progress with PM at least monthly (including & completes vs. % spent) and that PM is adhering to weekly rhythm.
  • Successfully contributes to the overall profitability and financial performance on projects.
  • Oversees staff deliverables and production assigned to their projects to ensure client, legal, and company requirements are met.

Qualifications:

  • Manage all aspects of the design, overseeing technical preparation of design services and construction support services, including all aspects of contractual obligations from design, quality management, and change management.
  • Full managerial responsibility for all aspects of the project, scope, schedule, design, quality, staff, etc.
  • Assure the project team complies with the contract agreement as well as exercise rigid cost control to implement the approved design within established budget restraints.
  • Develop and mentor less experienced staff.
  • Engage in proposals and sales activities, represent HZ at industry events, and provide internal mentorship when not engaged in an active project.
  • Direct and coordinate the activities of discipline and segment leads, who may be located across the U.S., to ensure the project progresses on schedule and within the prescribed budget.
  • May oversee teams of more 50+engineers depending on project size.

This position will office out of our Dallas, TX location in a 'Class A' office space including a state-of-the-art gym (no cost), covered parking, food court, and more.

Physical Requirements:

  • Prolonged periods sitting at a desk and working on a computer
  • Must be able to lift up to 25 pounds at times
  • The employee must be able to concentrate on details, work under deadline pressures, apply sound logic and judgment, and prioritize tasks and responsibilities
