The Department of Computer Science at Appalachian State University invites applications for one non-tenure-track faculty positions at the rank of lecturer beginning August 2026. The department seeks a dynamic candidate who is committed to teaching excellence and to maintaining an active research program. The department has 18 full-time faculty members with interests that range from core areas to interdisciplinary collaborations.

The Bachelor of Science in Computer Science program serves about 400 students and is accredited by the Computing Accreditation Commission of ABET. Approximately 25 students are enrolled in the Master of Science program with concentrations in Systems, Theory, Data Science, Web & Mobile Programming, and Artificial Intelligence.

The department takes pride in having an exemplary record of external funding through several scholarships, CS education, and research projects. The department is recognized by state and regional businesses for providing quality education and several of our faculty have received prestigious teaching awards. Instructional duties will include in-person and/or online introductory-level computer science lectures and laboratories. More advanced courses may also be assigned, depending upon candidate qualifications and departmental needs. The candidate will hold office hours for students and perform the other normal duties associated with teaching. Candidates will be expected to engage in relevant service activities.

ABD with reduction in rank and salary: ABD will be considered for this position. Evidence of successful defense of the dissertation must be received by July 31 for a fall hire or November 30 for a spring hire. If confirmation of defense is not provided by the deadline, the candidate will receive a new one-year fixed-term contract and be hired at the rank of Instructor. The candidate's salary will also be reduced to a lower rate commensurate with other full-time instructors in the same department. However, if degree verification is provided before the end of the one-year fixed-term contract, the candidate will be returned to the rank of assistant professor with commensurate compensation beginning July 1 of the following academic year.

No ABD consideration: Only candidates with an earned doctorate or terminal degree from an accredited institution will be considered for the position. Since ABD will not meet the minimum requirements, ABD will not be considered.
