Graduate Scientist I, Environmental

Halff is seeking a motivated entry-level Environmental Scientist to join our growing Environmental team as a Graduate Scientist I in our North Austin, TX office.

The ideal candidate will have experience supporting environmental field data collection, with an emphasis on Texas natural resources. This role requires hands-on experience collecting environmental data, GIS mapping, and document preparation/reporting as it pertains to waters of the U.S. and wetland delineations and species impact and habitat assessments in compliance with local, state, and federal regulations (e.g., Section 404 of the Clean Water Act, the Endangered Species Act, and the National Environmental Policy Act).

What you may do:



  • Perform fieldwork for waters of the U.S. and wetland delineations and species impact and habitat assessments.
  • Collect data in compliance with local, state, and federal regulation of natural resources.
  • Travel as needed, including extended overnight stays of up to two weeks on rare occasions.
  • Work outdoors in varying weather conditions while prioritizing safety, productivity, and project success.
  • Utilize ArcGIS Pro and/or GPS technologies to support data collection, mapping, and analysis efforts.
  • Assist in the preparation and submission of technical reports, compliance documentation, and Section 404 permit applications while ensuring compliance with applicable environmental regulations.
  • Build knowledge of environmental regulations, policies, and industry best practices.
  • Support environmental projects from initiation through completion, ensuring adherence to scope, schedule, budget, and quality standards.
  • Collaborate with engineers, project managers, and multidisciplinary teams.
  • Provide quality support to project teams to ensure successful execution and delivery of sustainable solutions to clients.


What you will need:



  • Bachelor's or Master's degree in Biology, Environmental Science, Natural Resource Management, or a related field.
  • 0-2 years of relevant experience in environmental science or a similar role.
  • Proficient with Microsoft Office Suite (e.g., Word, Excel, PowerPoint) and Adobe Acrobat.
  • Familiar with ArcGIS/ArcGIS Pro and GPS technology (familiarity with CADD is a plus).
  • Physically capable of performing fieldwork (i.e., walking or standing for long periods of time, digging soil samples, carrying field equipment) in varying outdoor conditions, including extreme heat, cold, and wind.
  • Ability to lift up to 25 pounds on a routine basis.
  • Willingness and ability to travel to project sites as needed.
  • Ability to safely navigate active job sites and construction areas.
  • Strong written and verbal communication skills.
  • Ability to manage multiple tasks, prioritize effectively, and meet deadlines in a fast-paced environment.
  • High attention to detail and accuracy in conducting studies and preparing documentation.
  • Positive attitude with a proactive, self-starter mindset and a strong ability to collaborate within multidisciplinary teams.
  • Strong research, analytical, and problem-solving skills.
  • Working knowledge of environmental science principles, regulations, and industry practices.
  • Basic understanding of environmental assessment methods, including data collection, analysis, and interpretation.
  • Familiarity with environmental laws, regulations, and permitting processes.
  • Experience supporting or assisting with environmental projects.
  • Exposure to environmental modeling and assessment tools is a plus.
