Position Summary
This position will be part of an embedded emergency department-palliative care team comprised of dual-trained emergency medicine and palliative care physicians. Physicians will work 0.50 FTE traditional emergency department shifts and 0.50 FTE dedicated palliative care consults in the emergency department. Emergency department shifts will be conducted in both the Chapel Hill campus and Hillsborough campus emergency departments, treating both adult and pediatric patients. Embedded palliative care shifts will be at the Chapel Hill campus.

Physicians are required to assess and attend to patients who enter the hospital's emergency room. They immediately treat any injuries, infections, or other conditions to stabilize patients. Emergency department doctors request medical tests for patients, create treatment plans, and recommend patients to appropriate specialists.

When providing palliative care consultation in the department, physicians will work closely with the emergency department team and broader palliative care/hospice team to care for seriously ill patients. Physicians will support medical decision-making, symptom management, and psychosocial needs for patients and families in the emergency department.

This is a full-time position at 1.0 FTE.

Clinical Instructors, Clinical Assistants, Clinical Associates, and Clinical Professors will be considered.
Minimum Education and Experience Requirements

  • MD, DO, or equivalent.
  • Must be Board Certified/Board Eligible in both emergency medicine and hospice and palliative medicine.
