Summary
Under the general supervision of the Director of Engineering, the GIS-CAD Systems Coordinator shall perform duties such as: updating and creating maps, design drawings, create, maintain and update GIS databases, and GIS applications using geographic information systems (GIS), SAGIS, and computer aided design (AUTOCAD) technology; conducting research; reading and/or interpreting maps, blueprints, survey documents or sketches; proofing or comparing the information contained on maps/drawings with information from different sources; surveying utility paving and drainage design, measure distances, areas, perimeters, and angles; and uses computer applications to enter, query, use, update and store information. Performs a wide variety of mapping, design, and engineering support activities. The Coordinator shall also attend SAGIS board meetings and work with the SAGIS team on updates to our system. This position is considered safety sensitive and/or requires access to the safety sensitive areas as required under FAA and DOT regulations.

Position Requirements & Qualifications
- High school graduate or GED equivalent required.
- Associates Degree in Civil Engineering Technology with drafting, design, surveying, mapping, computer science, geography and information technology applications preferred.
- Three to five years’ experience in water and sewer design, highway construction, surveying, and drafting required.
- Knowledge of and/or background in heavy construction is preferred.
- Should be well-versed in computations related to civil engineering, surveying, and drafting.
- Ability to calculate grades, establish benchmarks, compute acreage manually and with the computer.
- Strong background in cartography.
- Excellent written communication skills.
- Excellent reading, writing, and arithmetic skills.
- Possession of a valid state issued driver’s license.
- Ability to meet and maintain Transportation Security Administration requirements authorizing unescorted access entry to Security Identification Display Area (SIDA).
Duties and responsibilities may be added, deleted or changed at any time at the discretion of supervisors, formally or informally, either verbally or in writing.
Work schedules, to include rotating shifts, hours of work and days off may be changed at any time at the discretion of the supervisor.
Regular and routine attendance at work is required.
Essential Job Responsibilities
Drafting and GIS
- Works from written or oral instructions to originate high quality professional engineering drawings from aerial photography, field survey information, and rough sketches. Drawings include plats for lease property exhibits, topographic studies, utility layouts, structural details, paving and drainage plans, building floor plans and airport master maps.
- Uses appropriate computation methods, existing source documentation, ESRI and AUTOCAD software tools to develop, populate and manage GIS, SAGIS, and AUTOCAD data. Converts maps/design drawings and related information into different formats, including the interpretation of survey bearings and distances to properly input new data to appropriate GIS and/or AUTOCAD layer for reference.
- Performs quality control and quality assurance on GIS and Auto CAD data. Compares information on digital maps to hardcopy information and checks for accuracy. Compares legal survey documents with current GIS and AUTOCAD information.
- Assists other employees with access to and development of specific GIS and Auto CAD data.
- Produces high quality maps and reports from GIS, Auto CAD and other related data. Queries, displays and produces hardcopy output from GIS and Auto CAD data for information. Prepares/mounts visual displays to be used in presentations.
- Performs calculations (e.g., area, distance, perimeter, etc.) using appropriate technical device. Verifies "error of closure" using appropriate device.
- Prepares changes and updates the Airport Layout Plan (ALP) and other engineering records, including design, drafting and estimating assignments, as required. Prepares surveys upon request.
- Computes and maintains records of square footage of Airport Commission buildings and acreage or square footage of real property, buildings, and areas under lease from the Airport Commission.
- Updates maps, charts, exhibits, and floor plans on a continuous basis, including water, sanitary sewer, storm drainage, and electric cable locations, and airfield signage and marking plans.
- Develops, populates and maintains GIS data base of all airport attributes in accordance with FAA AGIS requirements.
- Produces graphic displays, statistical charts, signs, and forms with a high degree of neatness and information content.
- Designs and prepares camera-ready formats for out-of-house printing of booklets, business cards, etc.
- Manipulate and / or create Power Point presentations.
- Establishes and maintains standards for documentation creation including but not limited to CADD standards, naming convention.
- Preparation design and layout, of a variety of reports, displays, literature, maps, and exhibits; ensures the accuracy and completeness of digital GIS maps and data files.
- Independently responds to technical / administrative instructions.
- Devises new approaches to problems and coordinates technical aspects of work for GIS and CADD application.
- Works under very minimal direction.
Surveying
- Assists in verifying existing surveys and boundary lines for lease property.
- Assists in interpreting engineering data to establish benchmarks and control points for projects done by the Savannah Airport Commission.
- Assists in establishing and maintaining property lines, benchmarks, concrete monuments, and elevation points.
- Assists in determining existing and proposed locations, inverts, elevations, bearings, and distances for roads, storm drainage, sewer lines, and concrete work.
- Maintains accurate and complete field notes to be used to prepare engineering drawings accurately depicting the project area.
- Must be able to interpret and plot latitude and longitude points on designated charts and maps.
Additional Requirements
- Assists in developing and updating plans showing existing and proposed roads, streets, water and sewer lines, underground cable, etc.
- May check plans and drawings to ensure that established Savannah Airport Commission guidelines are followed by tenants regarding minimum space requirements, building setback, advertising, and dimensions of base area.
- Performs amateur photography.
- May assist with Environmental, Building, and Civil Inspections.
Traits & Distinguishing Characteristics
- Ability to prepare rough sketches of work.
- Considerable knowledge of drafting techniques and ability to apply recognized methods to produce high quality work.
- Must also have a thorough working knowledge of graphics and illustrative techniques.
- Ability to work from rough sketches and notes, oral descriptions, survey notes, sketches and specifications and transform these into high quality professional working drawings.
- Must have a high degree of skill in the use of all materials, equipment, and procedures relating to reprographic and photographic techniques used in the production and duplication of engineering drawings.
- Must be able to correspond with architects and engineers, both in writing and orally.
- Must be an experienced AUTOCAD operator with training, certification and experience with Autodesk, Auto CAD, ESRI, ARC Info and any civil engineering survey, drainage, and site design software.
- Should be able to comprehend FAA AC 150/5300-13A (Design) and AC 150/5370-10H (Construction Standards).
- Working knowledge of the following FAA Advisory Circulars: AC No: 150/5300-16B, AC No: 150/5300-17C, and AC No: 150-5300-18B preferred.
- Must be able to obtain their AOA “Green Stripe” certification
- Considerable ability to determine types of materials required to perform assigned tasks and to accomplish assigned duties in a skilled fashion requiring minimal supervision.
- Ability to interpret a variety of instructions and regulations furnished in written, oral, or diagrammatic form.
- Ability to carry out and relay detailed oral and written instruction.
- Demonstrated ability to provide written/verbal solutions to problems required.
- Ability to work without direct supervision as assigned.
