The Radiation Therapist 1 communicates effectively with patients, families, medical staff, healthcare team members, supervisors and outside contacts. Responsible for treatment modalities and protocols to accurately set-up and administer treatments on a daily basis. Verifies the proper functioning of linear accelerators, simulators and Computed Tomography machines. Job Responsibilities Communicates with families, physicians or other healthcare team members in anticipation of special needs of patients and/or families in a timely manner to facilitate effective treatment of patients; Demonstrates collaboration in communication with team members while being open to feedback and receptive to change. Provides education and support of methods appropriate to patients' levels of understanding and motivation while including families and caregivers in education and training as appropriate. Positions all patients for initial treatment to verify set-up; Verifies beam directional devices, ancillary aids and blocking via record and verification systems on machines and patients' computerized treatment plans before initiation of radiation beam; Maintains accurate records of daily treatments and other records as required. Acts as a Liaison between physicians and machine staff by utilizing technical expertise for all difficult/complex treatments on various machines. Documents any corrections in charts resulting from changes in the originally prescribed course of treatment; Detects unsatisfactory set-up and/or errors and resolves/reports to physicians. Ensures that portal verification films are taken at appropriate intervals. Recognizes the need for adjustments in treatment ports when comparing simulation/portal films or patient positions; Performs daily quality assurance on linear accelerators, simulator and Computed Tomography machines to verify accurate output of designated parameters. Records findings and reports erratic operations of equipment. Verifies operation of emergency shut offs and interlocks; Participates or provides assistance with in-vivo dosimetry measurements and special dosimetry. Attends department in-services/conferences and meetings. Demonstrates knowledge of department treatment modalities and protocols in scheduling, set-up and treatment of patients; Keeps abreast of new technology in field of practice and assists in the development of new techniques, participation in research projects and/or educational activities. May perform additional duties as assigned. Additional Requirements Certification - Basic Life Support upon start; American Registered Radiologic Technologist certified or registry eligible within one year of employmentLicensure - Licensed Radiologic Technologist is only required for team members in ambulatory areas; such as PROCExperience - None RequiredEducation - Associate's degree
