SPARK Program Basic Information

SPARK is an independent 501(c)(3) non-profit affiliate of UMKC, housed in the External Relations and Constituent Division. SPARK provides non-credit classes to older adults who enjoy learning for learning's sake. A volunteer driven organization, SPARK relies on its Board of Directors and other key volunteers for business management, curriculum planning and membership retention.

Through strong partnerships with SPARK committee members and SPARK volunteers, SPARK has been serving the community for over 30 Years.

Job Description

SPARK Program and Office Coordinator Role Summary

We are seeking a SPARK Program and Office Coordinator who is an ambitious, growth-minded professional, values lifelong learning, and takes initiative when opportunities arise. This role requires excellent communication and interpersonal skills, the ability to work effectively with older adults, and the capacity to work both independently and as part of a team.

This position is gift-funded and dependent on future funding availability.

SPARK Program and Office Coordinator Responsibilities

  • Develop, organize, and coordinate SPARK program activities, including managing day-to-day class logistics, Zoom session setup, participant support, communications, troubleshooting routine issues, and maintaining accurate program records.
  • Act as the first point of contact for volunteers, members, and potential members of SPARK, as well as the direct link between UMKC and the SPARK Board of Directors.
  • Support curriculum operations by assisting with class curriculum materials, enrollment reporting, evaluations, member surveys, and instructor appreciation activities.
  • Develop and distribute communications to members regarding classes, programs, and special events.
  • Assist with planning and execution of SPARK events such as the pre-Spring and Fall Quarter Kickoffs and annual Social with Substance events.
  • Maintain and update the program's website by adding class information, updating catalog content, and uploading approved materials on a quarterly basis.
  • Oversee program-related tasks performed by the part-time SPARK Assistant Coordinator, in a non-supervisory capacity.
  • Support SPARK's financial operations by preparing expense checks, maintaining QuickBooks entries, providing monthly statements to the external accountant, assisting with the annual UMKC Affiliate financial review, and generating clear financial reports for Board leadership, including explanations of key line-item expenses.
  • Provide administrative support to the SPARK Board of Directors and the SPARK program, including pulling reports, preparing and distributing meeting materials, and taking meeting minutes.
  • Identify potential UMKC and community partnership opportunities and share them with the SPARK Board and Committees for consideration.
  • Other duties as assigned.
Shift

This is a full-time, benefit-eligible position working on average 30 hours per week. Hours and weekly scheduling may vary throughout the academic year based on workload and program needs.

This position is onsite Monday - Friday.

Minimum Qualifications

High school diploma or equivalent and at least 5 years of experience from which comparable knowledge and skills can be acquired is necessary.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Bachelor's degree in a related field.
  • Demonstrated compassion and patience in supporting older adults, particularly those with limited technology skills.
  • Experience working in a 501(c)(3) or nonprofit organization.
  • Experience using MailChimp and SurveyMonkey for communications and survey administration.
  • Proficiency in Microsoft Office applications (Word, Excel, Outlook, PowerPoint).
  • Strong knowledge of Zoom, including meeting setup and basic troubleshooting.
  • Basic accounting skills and experience processing financial transactions.
  • Working knowledge of QuickBooks or similar accounting software.
  • Strong project management, organizational, and critical thinking skills.
Anticipated Hiring Range

The anticipated hiring range for this position has been established as $15.00 - $18.67 per hour.

Salary is determined by a variety of factors, including but not limited to, the individual's particular combination of education, skills, and experience, as well as organizational requirements.
