Your Job

As a Mechanical Design Engineer, you will design and development of modules and systems for Molex OSBU's optical networking hardware-line cards and highperformance optical platforms. You will apply mechanical design experience and knowledge working in a highly capable team of optical, mechanical, electrical and process engineers to develop and deliver our products meeting internal and customer requirements.

You will be responsible for the overall mechanical design, specifications and performance of developing products from conceptual phase through production.

Our Team

Molex is a global leader in the optical industry, renowned for delivering high-performance, field-proven wavelength management solutions. Our expertise spans components, modules, integrated line-cards, and chassis, with a strong focus on innovation, miniaturization, and manufacturing automation. Our advanced optical, mechanical, electrical, and software design capabilities support the evolving needs of high-density, high-bandwidth, and flexible optical networks across telecom, datacom, hyperscale datacenters, artificial intelligence, and supercomputing.

Based in Fremont, CA, you'll join a global team serving world-wide telecom and datacom clients, developing next-generation optical systems for AI, cloud, and 5G networks.

What You Will Do

  • Design and develop mechanical modules and systems - 3D modeling, detail design and drafting of components and assemblies for telecommunication equipment.
  • Create and refine telecom electronic system packaging - Conceptual design, refining through analysis and detailing of telecom electronic mechanical design.
  • Conduct design reviews - Generate review content, conduct structured mechanical design reviews, document design decisions and plan milestones for mechanical design delivery.
  • Configuration management - Control configuration of part revisions and BOMs (bill of material) for designs through engineering change orders (ECOs) in product lifecycle management software.
  • Interpret and design to meet customer requirements - Design to meet customer mechanical specifications and requirements.
  • Rapid Prototyping - Produce rapid prototypes (3D print, quick-turn machined and sheet metal parts, prototype tooling) to validate design approach early in the design cycle.
  • Design with other technical disciplines - Design as part of a team of electrical, mechanical, process, optical and reliability engineers to ensure optimal system design meeting program goals.
  • Continuous improvement - Lead troubleshooting, root cause analysis and design improvement initiatives of products.
  • Work in a global team - Engage with design engineering, manufacturing engineering, simulation engineering and operations across multiple global engineering sites.
  • Generate mechanical and cosmetic specifications - Create 2D specifications or drawings including all required details to manufacture mechanical parts.

Who You Are (Basic Qualifications)

  • Bachelor's or Master's degree in Mechanical Engineering or related field.
  • Three (3) years or more engineering experience.
  • Experience with electronics mechanical design
  • Experience in geometric dimensioning and tolerancing (ASME Y14.5-2009).
  • Experience with tolerance stackups analysis
  • Proficiency in 3D CAD software for modeling, assemblies, and detailed drawings.
  • Experience designing mechanical products from concept to production.
  • Experience with manufacturing and part fabrication processes of sheet metal and machining.
  • Knowledge in material science and material selection (engineering grade metals, plastics, finishes and plating).
  • Experience with revision control and structured change process (ECO management).
  • Knowledge in telecom industry standards (Telcordia standards)

What Will Put You Ahead

  • Experience with electronic system packaging mechanical designs in telecom and datacom products
  • Experience with DFM/DFA (Design for Manufacturing / Design for Assembly)
  • Experience with manufacturing processes of injection molding and die casting
  • Experience with mechanical supplier management
  • Experience with tolerance stackups analysis
  • Experience with Finite Element Analysis (FEA) for structural and thermal simulations
  • Experience with hands-on machining and fabrication including milling, turning, additive manufacturing and assembly
  • Knowledge of environmental and reliability testing (vibration, shock, thermal cycling, etc.)
