Position Description:

TheReal-TimeNeuroRehabilitationLab(RT-NRL)at the University of Iowa invites applications for aPostdoctoralResearchScholar in the field of motor control, non-invasive neurophysiology, brain stimulation, and neurorehabilitation. The overall mission of theRT-NRLis to (1)identifybrief temporal windows during which the neurophysiological mechanisms supporting voluntary upper extremity movements are most active and (2) deliver evidence-based neurorehabilitation interventions during these windows.The individual selected for this position will contribute to multiple projects carried out in the lab(descending control of grasping behaviors, oscillatory mechanisms of motor output, real-time EEG-informed brain stimulation) as well as an independent project designed in collaboration with the Principal Investigator.Most studies in the lab combine TMS, EEG, EMG, clinicalassessmentsand behavioral testing through highly multimodal experimental designs. ThePostdoctoral Research Scholarwillcontribute to laboratory projects by designing and executing research studies, maintaining robust laboratory records in accordance with local and federal regulations, analyzing data, publishing manuscripts, and overseeing the activities of junior research team members (including interns, undergraduate students, and graduate students). The Postdoctoral Research Scholar is also expected to collaboratively engage with all lab members during project meetings, departmental seminars, and discussionsofongoing and planned projects. The primary mentor for this position is Dr. Sara Hussain, PhD,but thePostdoctoral Research Scholarmayalso collaborate with a larger team of physicians, neurophysiologists, and rehabilitation specialists at the University of Iowa and otherresearch institutionsnationally. The preferred start date for this position isSeptember1, 2026, but alternative start dates(earlier or later)will be considered. This position is for one year, witha possibilityof renewal for a second year.

The ideal candidate will be interested inpursuing an academic career inhuman neurophysiology,motor control,and/or humanneuroscience broadly defined.

Work authorization sponsorship is available in J-1 status.

Education Requirement:


  • PhD degree inHuman Physiology, Rehabilitation Science, Kinesiology, Psychology, Biomedical Engineering, Electrical Engineering, or relatedfield.


Required Qualifications:


  • 3-5years' experiencewith laboratory-based humansubjects'research.
  • Strong statistical, analytical, programming (i.e., MATLAB, Python, R), and quantitative reasoning skills, including the ability to independently analyze data.
  • Existingtrack recordof first-author peer-reviewed publications.
  • Strong written and interpersonal communicationskills.
  • Ability to work and learn independently, whileremainingmotivated to contribute to the laboratory's research mission.
  • Strong organizationaland scientific reasoningskills.


Desirable Qualifications:


  • Experience with either neurostimulation (TMS,tDCS, etc.),neuroimaging (EEG, MRI, MEG, etc.), or multi-modal neurostimulation-neuroimaging techniques.
  • Machine learning backgroundand/or knowledge.
  • Experience working with individuals with neurological disorders (i.e., stroke, Parkinson's disease, spinal cord injury, etc.).
  • Experiencecontributing toclinical trialsin accordance withlocal and federal regulations.
