Supervises employees in highly technical sub-specialty area. Directly oversees all the technical operations of the laboratory, enforcing standard operating procedures and research methods. Responsible for laboratory meeting quality assurance standards.

  • Supervise the technical work productivity and accuracy of the department section by maintaining equipment in operational status, monitor/check that all maintenance is performed on schedule by techs and outside vendors.
  • Ensure turn-around-times are met. Determine downtime needs and implement downtime procedures to ensure service continuity.
  • Ensure satisfactory quality control at all times. Assist in troubleshooting QC issues and outliers.
  • Maintain equipment in an operational status. Minimize downtimes. Oversee troubleshooting and repair of equipment.
  • Supervise the productivity and testing accuracy of the section.
  • Assist Senior Supervisor in overseeing contracts.
  • Maintain a minimum supply of inventory. Order adequate supplies of reagents and consumables.
  • Acts as first consultant for technical problems, review staff's work as needed.
  • Assist Senior Supervisor with budget planning by projecting needs for new or replacement equipment and/or reagents.
  • Assist in development and implementation of changes.

  • Oversee training of CLS's, HLT's and CLS trainees in the department.
  • Establish training schedules with the Senior Supervisor.
  • Prepare and edit training checklists.
  • Review training checklists for completion and notify Sr Supervisor of any issues with training.
  • Accumulate and employ suitable teaching materials.

  • Develop new test procedures, oversee validation of new tests and analyzers. Assist with preparing EP evaluators reports and documents for lab director approval. Coordinate the go-live date for new tests/instruments with vendor, LIS, and clinicians as needed. Ensure that staff are trained prior to go live. Perform IT and interface testing, validation of data entry and result transmission.
  • Update existing test procedures as needed.
  • Ensure that all documents and versions are consistent across all areas.
  • Ensure that staff have reviewed procedures and signed off on all required tasks in document control system.

  • Oversees compliance in department.
  • Assist in assurring all laboratory activities are performed in accordance with regulatory agency requirements (AABB, FDA, CLIA, CMS, TJC, CAP, California DPH).
  • Reviews maintenance and temperature charts,
  • Maintains equipment and maintenance records.
  • Develop competency assessment modules and ensure staff completion and compliance.
  • Ensure proficiency testing samples are completed by staff and submitted by the deadline.
  • Ensure staff are up to date on required occupational health and online training modules.

Administrative duties:

  • Prepare staff schedules to cover workload to ensure turn-around-times are maintained.
  • Coordinates schedules for cross coverage for vacation/time off requests, daily breaks and meal schedules, and coverage during unexpected staff shortage/higher workload. Authorizes overtime as needed.
  • Review, update, and approve staff timesheets.
  • Conduct performance evaluation at least annually for each employee assigned.
  • Documents in writing and submit to Sr Supervisor poor performance of supervised personnel. Assist with corrective actions as needed.
  • Interview candidates for positions in the department.
  • Complete deviation reports and on-line Incident Reports as necessary; perform immediate corrective action, investigate and counsel employees.

  • Perform work as a CLS Specialist/CLS as needed
  • Maintain proficiency in performing department's testing and non-technical procedures.

Additional duties:

  • Performs additional duties, projects and /or special assignments when requested by Senior Supervisor within an agreed time period.
  • In the absence of Senior Supervisor, may temporarily assume some senior supervisory responsibilities.

REQUIRED QUALIFICATIONS:

  • Five years of recent Clinical Laboratory Scientist experience
  • Bachelor's degree in related area and / or equivalent experience / training
  • Maintains current knowledge of laboratory concepts, new methodologies and advances in the field of specimen processing, automation, and procedures
  • Ability to apply principles in a clinical laboratory setting
  • Knowledge of Clinical Laboratory, medical center, HR and UC policies and processes
  • Thorough knowledge of all relevant sub-specialty area industry, health and safety, federal, and state regulations
  • Ability to organize assigned staff and laboratory operations in an efficient and effective manner. Highly developed personal organizational skills
  • Knowledge of quality assurance methods and ability to apply principles to design quality systems
  • Proven ability to multi-task and reliably manage multiple projects through from inception to completion on schedule in a complex, challenging environment
  • Flexibility to adjust to constantly changing priorities
  • Verbal and written communication skills to explain technical clinical specialty concepts, actively listen, persuade, advise, and counsel
  • Ability to use laboratory's application programs
  • Skills to perform data checks using queries, visual review and other appropriate means
  • Skills to evaluate issues and identify solutions within defined procedures and policies
  • Demonstrated ability to solve problems and suggest solutions through critical thinking process to verify data accuracy

  • Any recent CLS Supervisory experience
  • Licensure in specialty area
