ROLE OVERVIEW:

Responsible for planning, directing, implementing, administering, reporting and controlling the general accounting function. Establishes accounting policies and procedures in accordance with GAAP and SOX to ensure the integrity of all recorded transactions. Supervises selected accounting personnel.

DUTIES AND/OR RESPONSIBILITIES (summary of components that make up the job)

1. Supervise all general accounting and accounts payable functions, including preparation, validation, and verification of billings, cash disbursements, revenue, expense, inventory management and other financial transactions.
2. Oversee constructionspecific accounting activities, including jobcosting, costcode structure management, labor/equipment/material cost allocation, and project cost reconciliation.
3. Prepare and analyze monthly WorkInProgress (WIP) schedules, including percentcomplete calculations, revenue recognition under ASC 606, costtocomplete forecasting, and grossmargin analysis.
4. Support operations, project managers, estimators, and field leadership by providing financial analysis, jobcost reviews, production reporting, and insights into project performance trends.
5. Maintain current knowledge of applicable accounting requirements, ensuring compliance with SOX, SEC, GAAP, and all constructionspecific accounting guidelines.
6. Ensure general ledger accounts are properly maintained and reconciled, including retainage, subcontractor balances, equipment costing, and contractrelated accounts.
7. Review and validate project budgets, estimates, change orders, AIA pay applications, unitprice schedules, and subcontractor invoices for accuracy and compliance with contract terms.
8. Provide research and accounting guidance to operations personnel regarding contract interpretation, cost tracking, revenue impacts, and compliance requirements.
9. Supervise, train, mentor, and develop accounting personnel, ensuring strong performance, technical accuracy, and alignment with Knife River values.
10. Oversee equipmentcosting processes, including depreciation, shop charges, internal equipment rental rates, and equipment utilization reporting.
11. Assist with special projects, financial analyses, system enhancements, process improvements, audits, and other strategic or operational initiatives as needed.
12. Lead financial review meetings with project teams, communicating risks, opportunities, job performance, and recommended corrective actions..

14. Must maintain confidentiality to the highest degree and have excellent analytical abilities and team building skills.
15. Must maintain the highest level of moral and ethical standards at all times.
16. Ensure compliance with constructionrelated regulatory requirements, including DOT, MSHA, OSHA, EPA, DNR, DavisBacon/prevailing wage rules, certified payroll, lien waivers, subcontractor documentation, and other publicworks obligations.
17. Always work safely and take action to prevent any and all unsafe actions, processes, and behaviors.
18. Perform other duties as assigned.

KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, AND ABILITIES (types and extent of knowledge, skills or abilities an incumbent must possess to complete the job responsibilities satisfactorily)

1. Excellent written and verbal communication skills.
2. Strong organizational skills.
3. Knowledge of MS Office (Word, Excel, Outlook).
4. Able to work independently and under time constraints.

MINIMUM REQUIREMENTS (minimum educational, experience, or other relevant job requirements)

1. Bachelor's degree in accounting or finance.
2. Five years of related experience.
3. Past supervisory experience.
4. Strong analytical and financial skills.
5. High ethical and moral standards.
6. Excellent verbal, written and presentation skills. Ability to hold and maintain proper licensure and acceptable driving record.
7. Ability to work flexible shifts, including overtime, possible nights and some Saturdays.

PREFERRED REQUIREMENTS (preferred requirements i.e. certifications, software use, etc.)

1. CPA or equivalent certification preferred but not required
2. Experience with construction ERP systems (e.g.,JD Edwards)
3. Knowledge of construction compliance including certified payroll, DavisBacon, prevailing wage, lien waivers, retainage rules, and subcontractor compliance tracking.
4. Experience working in a construction or manufacturing related industry.
