DESCRIPTION OF WORK

This position focuses on safe equipment operation, roadway maintenance, and support of transportation activities across Somerset County. As a CDL Operator, you will perform the following duties:

  • Equipment Operation: Operate vehicles and machinery requiring a CDL and use equipment for which you are trained and certified
  • Safety Checks: Complete daily pre and post operation inspections and document findings according to requirements
  • Traffic Control: Perform flagging duties to manage traffic flow when equipment is not in operation
  • Manual Labor Tasks: Carry out tasks such as clearing culverts, cutting vegetation, installing signs, and completing general roadway maintenance
  • Maintenance Support: Make minor repairs, assist mechanics with equipment work, and maintain accurate equipment records
  • Workplace Safety: Follow safety procedures, report hazards or injuries immediately, and maintain awareness of environmental requirements

Work Schedule and Additional Information:
  • Full-time employment
  • Work hours are 7:30 AM to 3:30 PM, Monday - Friday, with a 30-minute lunch.
  • Work hours subject to change based on seasonal requirements and operational needs.
  • Telework: You will not have the option to telework in this position.
  • Salary: In some cases, the starting salary may be non-negotiable.

REQUIRED EXPERIENCE, TRAINING & ELIGIBILITY

QUALIFICATIONS

Minimum Experience and Training Requirements:

  • Successful completion of the Transportation Equipment Operator Trainee Program (Commonwealth job title or equivalent Federal Government job title, as determined by the Office of Administration); or
  • Graduation from a Commercial Driver's License Training School; or
  • An equivalent combination of experience and training.

Special Requirements:

  • Must possess a valid Pennsylvania Class A or Class B Commercial Driver's License with the Air Brake Restriction (L) removed.
  • Must possess a valid Medical Examiner's Certificate in accordance with the Federal Motor Carrier Safety Regulations.
  • Employees must obtain an active certification issued by the Pennsylvania Department of Transportation in the operation of heavy trucks and loaders and two additional pieces of construction equipment within the probationary period.
  • All seasonal employees must obtain an active certification issued by the Pennsylvania Department of Transportation in the operation of heavy trucks and loaders within the probationary period.
  • Employees must obtain an active Tank Vehicle Endorsement (N) during the probationary period and continuously maintain it while employed in this job.
