Job Description/Preferred Qualifications

With over 40 years of semiconductor process control experience, chipmakers around the globe rely on KLA to ensure that their fabs ramp next-generation devices to volume production quickly and cost-effectively. Enabling the movement towards advanced chip design through greater chemical process control is KLA's ECI Technology division.

ECI is an industry leader of in-process chemistry control, providing the precision of analysis the industry requires for consistent wafer quality while reducing chip feature size. Advanced wafer design drives the need for precision with reliability; ECI strives to lead the design of analytical equipment which can withstand the rigorous demands of the chemical processes for damascene, wafer-level packaging, clean and wet etch processes, with our Prima, Libra, Quanta and QualiSurf product lines.
A successful Mechanical Design Engineer will work in the Mechanical Department of KLA ECI division based in Totowa, NJ.
You will be responsible for the design process of mechanical part of new systems, including conceptual and detailed design using CAD systems (Autodesk Inventor, AutoCAD), detailed drawings, design review presentations.

  • Independently execute sustaining engineering projects by creating and updating 3D CAD models, subassemblies, and system layouts for analyzers and dosers derived from existing platforms.
  • Develop flow diagrams and system schematics based on customer requirements and engineering specifications.
  • Design and integrate mechanical, fluidic, and optical assemblies (e.g., pumps, valves, tubing, fittings, spectrometers, light sources, optics, electrodes, and motors) to ensure proper mounting, alignment, routing, and service access.
  • Create and maintain bills of material (BOMs) to support manufacturing, service, and supply chain.
  • Prepare documentation packages for release (e.g., drawings, assembly instructions, installation layouts, labeling, and supporting engineering documents) in accordance with internal standards.
  • Adapt designs for different chemistries, including material compatibility, wetted-path requirements, sealing approaches, tubing/fitting selection, and corrosion/chemical resistance considerations.
  • Adapt designs for varying tank counts and configurations, including sizing/arrangement, mounting, plumbing routing, access/service clearances, and shipping constraints.
  • Define facility requirements (utilities, footprint, clearances, and interface constraints) for system layouts based on customer site requirements.
  • Create and process Engineering Change Orders (ECOs) / Change Orders (COs) to release new or revised parts, assemblies, and documentation; maintain traceability and accurate revision history.
  • Support prototype builds and troubleshooting by performing fit checks, assessing tolerance stack-ups, and conducting root-cause investigations; implement corrective actions.

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Bachelor's degree in Mechanical Engineering or related discipline (or equivalent practical experience).
  • 2-5 years of mechanical design experience in electro-mechanical products, instruments, or industrial equipment; sustaining engineering experience preferred.
  • Proficiency with 3D CAD and drawing creation (e.g., SolidWorks, Creo, Inventor, or similar), including assemblies, subassemblies, and configuration management.
  • Ability to create/read system schematics and flow diagrams (P&ID-style) and translate customer requirements into mechanical layouts.
  • Working knowledge of fluidic component selection and integration (pumps, valves, tubing, fittings) including routing, serviceability, and leak prevention.
  • Exposure to optical/electrochemical/mechatronic hardware integration (mounting, alignment, cable/tube management, access for calibration and maintenance).
  • Experience creating and maintaining Bills of Material (BOMs) and supporting documentation packages (drawings, assembly instructions, installation layouts, labeling) to internal standards.
  • Understanding of material compatibility and chemical resistance considerations for wetted-path designs (seals, elastomers, plastics, metals) and corrosion/compatibility tradeoffs.
  • Knowledge of basic manufacturing methods and DFM/DFA principles; ability to assess tolerance stack-ups and perform fit checks.
  • Familiarity with engineering change control processes (ECO/CO), revision history, and traceability in a PLM/ERP environment.
  • Hands-on prototype/build support and troubleshooting skills, including root-cause analysis and implementation of corrective actions.
  • Strong communication and cross-functional collaboration skills (manufacturing, service, supply chain, and systems/electrical engineering); able to work independently and manage multiple priorities.
