Job Announcement

The Fairfax-Falls Church Community Services Board (CSB) is recruiting for an Adult Outpatient Psychiatrist. The CSB is a large public behavioral health care system that serves all of Fairfax County in Northern Virginia and serves approximately 24,000 clients per year. The CSB provides a comprehensive array of services for children and adults with Serious and persistent mental illness (SPMI)/Serious Emotional Disturbance (SED), and/or substance use disorders and/or Intellectual Disabilities.

These services include:

  • 24-hour residential crises stabilization
  • 24-hour, 7 days per week emergency services
  • Partial hospitalization
  • Outpatient and case management
  • Medical detox
  • Program for Assertive Community Treatment (PACT)/Homeless Outreach
  • Short- and long-term residential treatment for co-occurring disorders
  • Jail diversion
  • Forensics
This position provides thorough and comprehensive psychiatric evaluations; medication management; consultations, supervision, and collaboration with non-medical/medical staff, detailed clinical documentation; review of co-morbid medical illnesses, review/order laboratory tests; and crises intervention. This position also supports other therapists in emergency psychiatric evaluations. Responds to requests for assistance in crisis intervention situations as part of a combined staff approach. Leads or participates in administrative, programmatic, and clinical meetings. The CSB has a large medical staff that includes 35 full-time psychiatrists, primary care providers, a pediatrician, nurses (LPN, RN CNS, NP), and a physician assistant.

The successful clinician will have:
  • Extensive knowledge of modern psychiatric theory and practice.
  • Thorough knowledge of causes, treatment, and prevention of mental illness.
  • Ability to establish and maintain effective and cooperative relations with professional, administrative, and other people working in related fields, such as local welfare and public health departments, schools, courts, law enforcement hospitals and other institutions.
  • Ability to plan and execute work effectively.
Location: This position may work in multiple locations.

Illustrative Duties

(Any one position may not include all of the duties listed, nor do the examples cover all of the duties which may be performed.)

  • Conducts drug maintenance clinic for after care and borderline but ambulatory population to maintain them outside a hospital;
  • Prescribes treatment plan and psychotropic medication based on medication evaluation;
  • Supports other therapists in emergency psychiatric evaluations;
  • Evaluates exceptionally difficult cases. Recommends disposition;
  • Responds to requests for assistance in crisis intervention situations as part of a combined staff approach;
  • Provides consulting support for therapists in several disciplines and varied aspects of the mental hygiene program;
  • Provides individual, couple, and family therapy both short and long term;
  • Coordinates psychiatry training;
  • Participates in group therapy (with a co-therapist) for adolescents and children;
  • Counsels parents of children and adolescents in treatment on an individual and family basis;
  • Leads or participates in administrative, programmatic, and clinical meetings;
  • Acts as chief of an important component of the total program involving a small staff;
  • Evaluates patients for social services, courts, social security, and programs such as vocational rehabilitation, and home-bound teachers.

Required Knowledge Skills and Abilities

  • Extensive knowledge of modern psychiatric theory and practice;
  • Thorough knowledge of causes, treatment, and prevention of mental illness;
  • Considerable knowledge of available community resources useful in the treatment and prevention of emotional maladjustments;
  • Considerable knowledge of the clinical use of educational and psychological tests and techniques;
  • Ability to establish and maintain effective and cooperative relations with professional, administrative, and other persons working in related fields, such as local welfare and public health departments, schools, courts, law enforcement hospitals and other institutions;
  • Ability to plan and execute work effectively;
  • Ability to supervise the work of Mental Health Therapists.

Employment Standards

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:
Doctor of Medicine degree. Completion of an accredited psychiatry residency training program at the time of hire and that includes two years of experience in outpatient settings with medication management.

CERTIFICATES AND LICENSES REQUIRED:

  • A current and valid license to practice medicine in the Commonwealth of Virginia at the time of hire;
  • Eligibility for Board Certification by the American Board of Psychiatry and Neurology as a psychiatrist at the time of hire;
  • A current Controlled Substance Registration Certificate issued by the DEA at the time of hire.

NECESSARY SPECIAL REQUIREMENTS:
The appointee to this position will be required to complete a criminal background check, a Child Protective Services Registry check, and sanction screening to the satisfaction of the employer. A TB screening upon hire and annually thereafter.

This position is emergency/essential services personnel. (Required to report for duty during inclement weather and/or other emergencies.)

PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS:
Experience with treatment of serious mental illness and/or substance use disorders in a community setting.
Experience working with children, adolescents, and older adults within the behavioral health field.
Computer literate.

PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS:
Ability to stand, stoop, bend, stretch, walk, climb stairs, sit, type on a keyboard, and lift up to 20 pounds. Ability to read, write, type/use a computer. All duties performed with or without reasonable accommodations.
