Job Description:

We are seeking a Principal CIM/Automation Engineer with a strong focus on hands-on development and modernization of legacy manufacturing systems, applications, and databases. This role is ideal for an engineer passionate about designing and implementing advanced automation solutions, leveraging AI and modern technologies to upgrade and integrate legacy platforms. The successful candidate will play a key role in transforming manufacturing operations by developing robust, scalable, and intelligent automation systems.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities:
  • Analyze, design, and develop solutions for upgrading legacy manufacturing systems, applications, and databases to the latest technologies.

  • Develop custom software, scripts, and automation tools to modernize and integrate legacy platforms with current Manufacturing Execution Systems (MES), Statistical Process Control (SPC) systems, Advanced Process Control (APC) systems, Recipe Management (RM) systems and other factory control systems.

  • Apply AI and machine learning techniques to enhance automation, data analysis, and process optimization in legacy system upgrades.

  • Refactor and optimize legacy codebases, ensuring improved performance, reliability, and maintainability.

  • Collaborate with engineering, IT, and operations teams to gather requirements and deliver high-quality development projects focused on system modernization.

  • Troubleshoot and resolve complex issues related to legacy system integration, data migration, and automation upgrades.

  • Document development processes, migration strategies, and system architecture for knowledge sharing and future reference.

  • Stay current with advancements in AI, automation, and manufacturing technologies, and evaluate their applicability to ongoing and future projects.

  • Ensure all development activities adhere to industry standards, safety regulations, and company policies.

  • Perform additional job related tasks as directed by the manager.

Requirements/Qualifications:

Required Skills:
  • Bachelor's degree in Computer Science, Electrical Engineering, Automation, or a related field.

  • 10+ years of hands-on software development experience in CIM, automation, or manufacturing environments.

  • Demonstrated experience in analyzing, developing, and upgrading legacy systems, applications, and databases.

  • Advanced programming skills in languages such as C, C++, C#, Python, Java, VB6, VB.NET

  • Strong experience with database technologies (SQL, NoSQL), data migration, and integration.

  • Practical experience applying AI and machine learning to automation or manufacturing challenges.

  • Proficiency in refactoring legacy codebases and developing new automation solutions.

  • Proficiency with SECS/GEM standards.

  • Familiarity with industrial control systems (PLCs, SCADA) and manufacturing protocols.

  • Experience with SDLC, version control (e.g., Git), and modern development frameworks.

  • Excellent analytical, problem-solving, and communication skills.

Preferred Skills:
  • Experience in high-volume manufacturing sectors such as semiconductor, automotive, or electronics.

  • Advanced knowledge of MES, SPC, APC, RM and other factory control systems.

  • Experience with robotics, machine vision, and IoT integration.

  • Certifications in software development, automation, AI, or database management.

  • Experience with cybersecurity best practices for industrial systems.

  • Familiarity with technical documentation and migration planning.

  • Published work or patents in automation, CIM, AI, or legacy system modernization.

Benefits of working at Microchip

The annual base salary range for this position, which could be performed in the US, is $75,000 - $232,000.*

*Range is dependent on numerous factors including job location, skills and experience.
