Position Summary:

The Medical College of Wisconsin's Department Division of Pediatric Critical Care is seeking a Nurse Practitioner or Physician Assistant toprovide primary or specialty medical care within inpatient setting. This position is located in Milwaukee, WI at the Children's Wisconsin hospital campus. TheAdvanced Practice Provider(APP) works as a member of a multidisciplinary health care team who will contribute to excellence in program administration, patient care, patient safety, research, quality improvement, and teaching.

Position Highlights:
  • Patient Care: Examine, treat, and document acute and chronic care of children with complex and critical health conditions in the Pediatric Intensive Care Unit. Order, interpret, and record results of clinical tests and report results to physician team. Prescribe medications and make recommendations for other therapeutic treatments.

  • Teaching/Education: Instruction (formal and/or informal) of nurses and nursing students, medical students, residents, parents and other health care professionals.

  • Quality improvement: Participate in quality improvement initiatives.

  • Research: Participate in section research activities.

Core Advanced Practice Responsibilities

  • Perform comprehensive histories and physical exams, identifies normal and abnormal findings, including physical, cognitive, and psychosocial status.

  • Order, perform, and interpret screening and diagnostic procedures and tests, and appropriately communicates and documents information.

  • Write accurate and timely progress notes, procedure notes, and/or admission and transfer orders

  • Develop pharmaceutical and non-pharmaceutical treatment plans.

  • Monitor effectiveness of plan of care.

  • Educate patients on disease and treatment plans.

  • Perform procedures as trained and appropriately credentialed.

  • Document within the Electronic Medical Record (EMR) and completes other necessary documents.

  • Collaborate and/or consults with physicians and other health care providers as appropriate.

  • Educates, counsels, and assists patients and families regarding current health problems, health maintenance activities and preventive behaviors.

  • Attend required training and meets key regulatory requirements, including those of the privileging institution, CMS, and the Joint Commission.

  • Acquires information on the most current development and trends in the Physician Assistant field and/or Nurse Practitioner field, through educational programs, in-services, professional associates, and current literature.

Department/Division Highlights: Qualifications:

Preferred Experience:

  • Two years of nursing or physician assistant experience in direct patient care for children, with proven ability to communicate well with children, parents, and physicians under frequently stressful circumstances.

  • Preferred: previous experience in critical care nursing or comparable clinical practice; previous experience as a Nurse Practitioner or Physician Assistant with subspecialty concentration in acute/chronic or critical care; previous experience with technology-dependent children.

Minimum Education:
  • Advanced Practice Nurse: Master's Degree or higher in Nursing from a nationally accredited organization.

  • Physician Assistant: Bachelor's Degree or higher in Physician Assistant Studies from an ARC-PA-accredited organization.

Minimum Requirements:

Advanced Practice Nurse/ Advanced Practice Nurse Practitioner

  • Wisconsin RN License

  • Wisconsin Advanced Practice Nurse Prescriber License

  • Certification Requirements

  • American Heart Association Advanced Cardiac Life Support (ACLS)

    • American Heart Association Basic Life Support (BLS)

  • Nurse Practitioner Certification from a nationally accredited professional nursing organization

    • Pediatric Acute Care Certiciation

Physician Assistant

  • Wisconsin Physician Assistant License

  • Certification by National Commission on Certification of Physician Assistants (NCCPA)

  • Certification Requirements:

    • American Heart Association Advanced Cardiac Life Support (ACLS)

    • American Heart Association Basic Life Support (BLS)
