Description
Under general supervision of a Supervisor or Manager, or designated responsible personnel, the HLT I performs basic entry level activities processing primary specimens, operation, maintenance and repair of laboratory equipment, answering phones to responding to questions within scope of knowledge, effective communication with patients, internal and external customers and partners, sample tube and blood unit accessioning, blood collection, blood component manufacturing and labeling; problem resolution, troubleshooting specimen test/order problems, filing, cleaning and maintaining a safe work environment, and participating in special studies as required by the laboratory and the medical staff. Ensure all work is performed properly and in a timely manner. Other duties may include media/reagent quality control, routine quality control of equipment, and maintaining inventories of media and reagents used in diagnostic testing. The HLT I supports departmental purposes by providing skilled technical laboratory, donor center and/or blood product manufacturing support to the assigned department section. Skilled technical support duties are determined by the operational need of the assigned lab area's associated scope. These technical duties may include but are not limited to Quality Control set up, Microbiology specimen preparation, stability or linearity studies, validations, reagent preparation, donor eligibility screening, donor recruitment, and technical instruction for new staff about complex automated instrumentation processes. In some settings, the HLT I may also be required to perform specimen collection (with appropriate licensure). Must be able to work weekends, holidays and other shifts as needed. Performs all duties in a manner consistent with current good manufacturing Practices (cGMPs), current good Laboratory practices (cGLPs), AABB, FDA, CAP, and CLIA standards and regulations as applicable. Licensure may be required as applicable to the job role functions and scope of practice. On a daily basis, assess overall workload for any area that needs help, and help co-workers without being reassigned by the supervisor. Completion of probationary period may result in career ladder to the Hospital Laboratory Technician II position. Salary Range: $27.71 - 36.60 Qualifications
High school diploma or equivalent - Required Skill in performing mathematical calculations to include adding, subtracting, multiplying and dividing whole numbers, fractions, and decimals with and without a calculator to derive results. Skill in the practical application of fractions, percentages, ratios, and proportions to be used in making reagents and in performing calculations. Skill in performing operations with units in the metric system (length, area, volume, capacity, mass, and weight). Example: grams, milligrams, centimeters, liters, etc. | |
