Title: MiTracking Epidemiologist

Location: Remote/Virtual - Must Live and Work in Michigan

Occasional in-person at Lansing, MI office required



Purpose: The person in this position is responsible for providing epidemiological support for the Michigan Environmental Public Health Tracking program ("MiTracking").



Duties and Responsibilities:



  • Work with data partners to develop and update metadata for hazard, exposure, and health datasets.
  • Develop and work with data partners to develop and update data measures obtained from datasets, including display in GIS format.
  • Maintain data that are on the MiTracking data portal.
  • Lead twice yearly submission of data to CDC.
  • Ensure data quality and security through use of a Quality Assurance template.
  • Assist in development, enhancement, and testing of web portal display and query of Michigan's environmental hazard, exposure, and health data.
  • Assist in analyzing data, writing reports and publications, and developing visualizations such as dashboards and data stories using Michigan environmental data.
  • Monitor new developments in Environmental Public Health Tracking data analysis, display and use for public health actions.
  • Assist the MiTracking Health Educator in drafting language and interpreting data for reports, social media posts, and presentations.
  • Actively participate in State and/or CDC work groups.
  • Respond to internal and external data requests.
  • Assure compliance with confidentiality requirements.
  • Implement quality control on all projects.
  • Identify and utilize best practices for management of large data sets.
  • Document methods and processes.
  • Aid in grant reporting and application development.
  • Always represent the best interests of MDHHS and MPHI.
  • Conduct all other duties as assigned.



Qualifications/Requirements:



Education: Possession of a master's degree with a major in public health, epidemiology, or biostatistics with a minimum of 8 semester (12 term) graduate-level hours in epidemiology and/or biostatistics.



Experience: No experience required.



Important Skills and Characteristics:



  • Excellent organizational, data management, and analytical skills. Knowledge of data quality.
  • Effective oral and written commutation skills.
  • Self-motivated and able to complete work in a timely manner.
  • Proficiency in SAS, Microsoft Access and Excel, and Tableau (or other data visualization software) preferred.



Work Environment and Physical Requirements: Standard office environment. Requires a valid vehicle operator's license to attend in-state meetings, conferences, and trainings. Out-of-state travel requiring overnight stays is possible. This position is located in Lansing, Michigan. There is an option for hybrid remote/in-office or entirely remote work although attendance would be expected at occasional in-person meetings in Lansing, MI.



RESPONSIBILITY FOR THE WORK OF OTHERS: No assigned responsibility.



IMPACT ON PROJECTS, SERVICES AND OPERATIONS: This position provides epidemiologic support to a team of environmental public health specialists including epidemiologists and health educators and provides information to Information Technology/Web Developer professionals.
