HOURS/FLSA: Regular/Exempt

EMPLOYEE GROUP: The Education MN Professional Organization (TEMPO)

PROBATIONARY PERIOD: 12 months

POSITION SUMMARY:

Under the direction of the Director of Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion, the Racial Equity Organizer will further the organizing efforts and provide organizing support for Education Minnesota to further our racial equity, social justice, and public education goals. This organizer would demonstrate to members the value of membership in a union that works towards racial and social justice and will support Education Minnesota's efforts to recruit and retain educators of color, promote racial equity initiatives, and work to implement Education Minnesota's Affirmative Involvement and Racial Equity plans.

Education Minnesota is a member-led labor union that has identified racial equity and social justice as primary organizational goals. All staff are expected to participate, individually and collectively, in ongoing training, discussions, and activities to advance these goals.

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS AND RESPONSIBILITIES:

  • Support and expand current engagement efforts for members of color and specific affinity groups.
  • Support and expand efforts to further education Minnesota's racial equity and social justice agenda including direct organizing in local unions and working closely with the team of Organizing Specialists and staff across departments.
  • Train members in best practices in organizing, racial equity, social justice, and professional practice.
  • Support and expand member involvement in community engagement and partnerships with Education Minnesota allies and expand network of community partnerships in the Metropolitan and out state MN.
  • Expand and promote the value of unionism.
  • Participate in internal and external anti-racist, LGBTQ+ trainings.
  • Demonstrate a commitment to creating an inclusive space for members and staff, extending this culture of equity and inclusion into the work.
  • Collaborate with all of Education Minnesota's staff departments on initiatives, programs, and projects to foster and deepen BIPOC members' experience and connection to the union.
  • Engage and expand events with members across the State of MN.
  • Facilitate quarterly meetings with leaders of Ethnic Forums.
  • Support annual events for BIPOC members.
  • Other duties and responsibilities as assigned.

REQUIRED KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS & ABILITIES:

  • Proven commitment to union and community organizing as a means to improve public schools.
  • Strong knowledge of and background in anti-racist practice and/or cultural competence.
  • Strong presentation and communication skills and experience in developing materials and training adults in small and large groups.
  • Strong collaboration skills and the ability to work closely with Education Minnesota staff across departments.
  • Ability to think both strategically and creatively to solve problems.
  • Ability to perform and work well under deadlines/pressure.
  • Ability to represent Education Minnesota professionally in coalitions and with external partners.
  • A high level of discretion and good judgement.
  • Applicants must be aware of the issues facing public education and labor unions.
  • Participate in internal and external anti-racist, LGBTQ+ trainings to support growth and individual equity goals, including assessments of intercultural competence.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:

  • Bachelors' Degree or equivalent experience of 4 years in organizing or a public-school setting.
  • Valid driver's license.
  • Reliable transportation.

PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS:

  • Understanding of education issues, political and legislative landscape in Minnesota.
  • Previous union work experience.
  • Experience developing and implementing long-term organizing and leadership development campaigns in a union or community organizing context.

OTHER REQUIREMENTS:

  • Some travel with overnights stays.
  • Evening and weekend work may be required.

WORK ENVIRONMENT:

Work is in a general office environment. This position will interact with employees, vendors, members, and the public on a somewhat regular basis. These interactions require judgment and discretion that can involve confidential information, private information and some disagreeable human interactions.

PHYSICAL DEMANDS:

Employee is required to: CONTINUOUSLY sit, talk, and hear; FREQUENTLY stand, walk, and repetitively use hands dexterously (use fingers to handle, feel), reach with hands and arms, bend and physically lift and carry up to 10 pounds; OCCASIONALLY lift up to 50 pounds and infrequently travel by various conveyances (e.g., air, rail, auto).

STARTING SALARY RANGE:

First three steps of the salary schedule, in accordance with the current staff collective bargaining agreement: $104,087-$112,909 annual; placement depends on qualifications and previous experience.
