HDR has an exciting opportunity for a Mechanical Engineer in the Movable Bridge group, based out of our Newark, NJ office.

Description

The primary responsibility of the Senior Mechanical Engineer is to serve as technical project lead on mechanical system design and rehabilitation projects for the Movable Bridge Group. HDR's Movable Bridge program has evolved into an international practice that includes design of mechanical systems not only for movable bridges but also for other large machinery structures such as locks and dams, cranes, tunnels, and industrial handling equipment.

As project lead, the Senior Mechanical Engineer will be expected to function as Project Manager for some projects or serve as mechanical team lead and work with junior engineers to deliver mechanical designs for other projects. Typical tasks will include performing mechanical assessments, designing heavy machinery components, drafting design plans, and completing cost estimates and specifications for mechanical engineering projects.

The position offers the opportunity to work independently on small projects and on interdisciplinary teams on larger projects. Standard machine design techniques will be used during everyday tasks and design of custom solutions will be required for unique systems.

The Mechanical Engineer will be expected to travel and field work around 10% of the time to assess mechanical systems throughout the US.

In the role of Mechanical Engineer, we'll count on you to:

  • Coordinate the work of Mechanical Engineers with the balance of a multidiscipline team throughout the entire project's development
  • Establish client relations, and participate in the marketing, design and production meetings with regard to mechanical systems
  • Assume the mechanical lead on many projects
  • Participate in reviews with various governing agencies for code compliance
  • Conduct schematic, design development and contract document work sessions at project sites in conjunction with the Project Manager, Project Architect and other disciplines
  • Coordinate workload through the entire project development to complete documents on schedule
  • Track the financial aspects of projects, and coordinate and adjust the work efforts with the team to ensure that the work is completed within the parameters of the agreed-upon schedule
  • Work with the Project Manager, Regional Controller and Regional Director for project reviews with corporate management as needed
  • Perform other duties as needed
Preferred Qualifications
  • PMP Certification
  • Project Management experience
  • 5 years' experience in design of machinery for Movable Bridges or Heavy Movable Structures.
  • A minimum of 5 years in mechanical engineering design
  • Preference given to local candidates

Required Qualifications
  • Bachelor's degree in Mechanical Engineering
  • Previous experience in mechanical system design of commercial or institutional buildings
  • Requires professional engineering license recognized by the licensing board for the location of the position offered. Example: Professional Engineer (PE or P.Eng) license.
  • Experience in commercial or institutional facilities
  • Computer experience using MS Office, Trane TRACE or similar software, manufacturer selection software
  • Previous experience with an architectural/engineering or engineering consulting firm
  • An attitude and commitment to being an active participant of our employee-owned culture is a must
