SUMMARY
Open Until Filled-
Coordinate and develop courses in the Criminal Justice Academy; develop the Basic Law Enforcement Training (BLET) Program, coordinate and develop the Detention Officer Certification Course (DOCC); evaluate instructors in the presentation of the programs and evaluate students in their reception of the training; prepare reports, maintain a variety of training records for police, law enforcement personnel, NC Criminal Justice Education and Training Standards Division, NC Sheriff’s Education and Training Standards Division and the NC Community College System office. This position will collaborate with the Dean of Public Safety to provide continuing education training, and as the instructor-of-record, may need to teach various courses in criminal justice, BLET, and public safety.
DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES
- Manage the Basic Law Enforcement Training and Detention Officer Certification programs for entry level officers; manage the Continuing Education in-service training programs for officers in a two-county area.
- Interview and advise prospective BLET/CE students concerning program requirements, coordinate course offerings with students and instructors.
- Determine budget needs for all classes in the Criminal Justice Academy, Basic Law Enforcement and Detention Officer training.
- Prepare rules and regulations for BLET, DOCC students and for instructors who teach within the BLET / DOCC programs. Meet with instructors to be sure they understand credentialing and teaching standards.
- The BLET and DOCC programs require constant supervision/coordination from the director to assure that supplies and materials are available for class preparation; the director will monitor Continuing Education classes per Internal Audit Plan, locate and schedule appropriate facilities for the presentation of the BLET program and all Continuing Education classes, and procure equipment and supplies.
- The director is expected to attend training meetings relative to BLET / DOCC course presentations; meetings are held locally and statewide dealing with training needs, rule updates, and other changes that occur in the program.
- Provide students with information concerning attendance in BLET/DOCC/CE programs.
- Coordinate with the Southern Piedmont Law Enforcement Training Association their needs to in-service training; meet monthly with this organization; coordinate with the region’s police departments their different needs within the BLET and Continuing Education programs.
- Participate in the registration process for new BLET/DOCC/CE students.
- Provides guidance and support to students in exploring, securing, and transitioning into employment opportunities following completion of BLET/DOCC/CE programs including career advising, résumé development, interview preparation, and connections with industry partners.
- Maintain all student grades and records of training as required by the NC Criminal Justice Education and Training Standards Division, NC Sheriff’s Education and Training Standards Division and the NC Community College system.
- Maintain records for all instructors who teach for the BLET/ DOCC /Criminal Justice Academy.
- Maintain a high standard of professional and ethical practice in representing the College. Maintain confidentiality of sensitive and/or confidential information. Demonstrate a thorough knowledge of the field or discipline with continued adherence to professional accountability. Provide a high level of service to customers by establishing and maintaining effective working relationships and partnerships. Accept responsibility for managing situations and problems. Utilize independent judgment in problem solving complex issues. Work cooperatively with team members and colleagues, contributing positively and constructively to the achievement of team and College objectives. Adhere to the College’s policies, procedures, and other established guidelines. Perform other duties as assigned, including special projects.
- Maintain currency of education through professional development.
- Lead comprehensive budget development, management, and accountability. Administer and monitor departmental budget in alignment with institutional and divisional goals.
- Perform other related duties incidental to the work described herein (attend divisional, Faculty/Staff and college-wide meetings; committee participation, etc.).
MINIMUM EDUCATION QUALIFICATIONS
- Master’s Degree from a regionally accredited institution in Criminal Justice or related field required.
MINIMUM EXPERIENCE QUALIFICATIONS
- Ten years’ experience in law enforcement as a sworn officer or equivalent required.
- Certified Instructor through the NC Criminal Justice Education and Training Standards Division
- Previous experience as a BLET School Director or DOCC School Director preferred.
- Previous experience with a Learning Management System, i.e., Canvas, Blackboard, Moodle preferred.
PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS
- Generally, works in a traditional climate-controlled office environment and requires the ability to sit for extended periods.
- Some walking, standing, and bending are required, with the ability to lift and maneuver items weighing up to 25 pounds.
- Work environment can be stressful at times in dealing with a wide variety of challenges and deadlines.
- In addition to regular office hours, position sometimes requires overtime and/or evening hours.
