Summary

Responsible for leading the process of detaining people who are arrested in the City of Garland and to humanely treat and protect the constitutional rights of inmates during their time of confinement. Also responsible for acting as a backup supervisor during the supervisor's absence.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities include the following. Other duties may be assigned.

  • Lead the process, detain and release of arrested persons including juveniles, as well as maintain the welfare and security of the prisoners and staff.

  • Prepare and serve meals to prisoners, provide personal health care items and dispense medications as needed and appropriate.

  • Monitor the security of the Detention Center including the security cameras, unlocked doors and gates inside and outside.

  • Process and collect payments for bonds, fines etc.

  • Backup the supervisor by coordinating the arraignment process of the detainee including preparation of arraignment packets for the judge, escorting the detainee to and from court and completion of follow-up paperwork (transfer, time serve, etc.) during his or her absence.

  • Coordinate with area agencies for receipt and transfer of prisoners.

  • Monitor and evaluate prisoners' medical needs and provide appropriate services.

  • Provide direction to Detention Officers regarding Department and City policies as well as State and Federal laws.

Minimum Qualifications

  • High School Diploma or G.E.D. equivalent 1 years experience

  • Or an equivalent combination of education and experience sufficient to successfully perform the essential functions of the job.

Preferred Qualifications

Education/ Experience:

  • 1-3 years experience as a detention officer or jailer in a government jail

Knowledge, Skills & Abilities:

  • Comprehensive knowledge of constitutional rights of prisoners

  • Comprehensive knowledge of law enforcement detainment policies and practices

  • Comprehensive knowledge of reporting management systems

  • Basic knowledge of payment processing procedures

  • Basic skill transcribing, recording and confirming data

  • Basic skill operating photographic and video recording equipment

  • Basic skill operating a computer and basic office equipment

  • Ability to subdue combative persons who may be under the influence of alcohol or other controlled substances

  • Ability to remain calm under extremely violent or stressful interpersonal situations

  • Ability to conduct a body search of someone of the same sex

  • Ability to administer first aid or CPR

Licenses and Certifications

  • Valid Class C Texas driver's license

  • First Aid/CPR Certification or the ability to obtain within 6 months of hire
