HJF is seeking a Physician III - Breast Surgeon to provide clinical, scientific, technical and programmatic support services to the Murtha Cancer Center Research Program's Clinical Breast Care Project (CBCP). The Physician will be responsible for the treatment of patients both benign and malignant disease, during the progression of their malignant disease and informing patients of the availability for participation in clinical research studies within established institutional policies and procedures, ensuring that all necessary steps are followed for safety and regulatory compliance, and for assuring accuracy of complex clinical documentation on patient's records while maintaining confidentiality.

Due to clearance requirements, this position is only able to consider US citizens.

This position will be in support of the Murtha Cancer Center Research Program's Clinical Breast Care Project and its Breast Center at Walter Reed NMMC, where the mission is to decrease morbidity and mortality of breast cancer amongst American women with particular focus on the active-duty female population, demographic, characteristics and risks. However, the physician will be responsible for the clinical care of patients of any type in the Breast Center.

The CBCP program utilizes a unique 5-pillar structure: Translational Clinical Care, Breast Cancer Risk Reduction, Biorepository, Biomedical Informatics, and Focused Research to perform research directly within the DoW into breast cancer and other diseases while improving the quality of life for our active-duty patients and their families, as well as veterans and beneficiaries.

The Henry M. Jackson Foundation for the Advancement of Military Medicine (HJF) is a nonprofit organization dedicated to advancing military medicine. We serve military, medical, academic and government clients by administering, managing and supporting preeminent scientific programs that benefit members of the armed forces and civilians alike. Since its founding in 1983, HJF has served as a vital link between the military medical community and its federal and private partners. HJF's support and administrative capabilities allow military medical researchers and clinicians to maintain their scientific focus and accomplish their research goals.


  • Provides surgical evaluation and treatment of breast conditions, both benign and malignant, as appropriate to medical license and specialty board certification.
  • Attend weekly breast multi-disciplinary clinic on Thursday mornings and Tumor Board (virtual) on Thursday afternoons (1500-1600).
  • Attend quarterly Breast Program Leadership Committee meetings.
  • Participate in the general surgery department academics and morbidity and mortality conferences on dates when content is relevant to breast surgery care or physician's own patients being presented.
  • Able to work as part of a multi-disciplinary team of medical professionals and others involved in the care of breast cancer patients across the spectrum of disease treatment and survivorship.
  • Give the following lectures to the trainees throughout the course of the academic year: a 1-hour breast lecture to the residents and one to the medical students per rotation cycle.
  • Designs, directs, and participates in clinical research protocols in conjunction with research physicians and scientists.
  • Directs and participates in the submission of clinical research protocols to the Institutional Review Board (IRB) and the Food and Drug Administration (FDA).
  • Assists in securing funding (assists with writing proposals, etc.).
  • Monitors and evaluates the quality and appropriateness of the clinical research program.
  • Analyzes clinical data. Prepares program status reports to the institution, regulatory agencies, and sponsors of the clinical research programs scientific papers for presentation at local and national meetings and for publication in medical and scientific periodicals.
  • May perform other duties and responsibilities as assigned or directed by the supervisor. This may include attendance of and participation in required training for role.

Education and Experience

  • Doctoral degree - MD or DO is required.
  • Completion of General Surgery residency and Breast fellowship.
  • Minimum of 6-8 years experience required.

Required Knowledge, Skills and Abilities

  • Thorough knowledge of general surgery, breast surgery, and clinical medicine and the procedures and techniques necessary for performing research tasks.
  • Knowledge of medical science and the development of clinical research programs.
  • Experience (knowledge) in the design of clinical research trials.
  • Ability to communicate effectively.
  • Ability to make effective presentations and publish.
  • Excellent verbal, written and interpersonal skills.
  • US Citizenship and the ability to obtain and maintain a T3/Secret security clearance.

Physical Capabilities

  • Lifting: Requires lifting materials up to 10 lbs.
  • Ability to stand or sit at a computer for prolonged periods.
  • Ability to stand in an operating room for prolonged periods.

Licenses and Certifications

  • Licensure to practice medicine in Maryland; Board certified or board eligible for certification in General Surgery

Work Environment

  • This position will take place primarily in an out-patient clinic setting but also involves caring for breast patients who are hospitalized as well as being primarily responsible for their patient's surgical care.

Compensation

  • The annual salary range for this position is $152,500 $253,000. Actual salary will be determined based on experience, education, etc.
