The Stritch School of Medicine at Loyola University Chicago invites nominations and applications for a Research Professor and a distinguished ophthalmologist-educator who will transform how future physicians learn ophthalmology through virtual reality (VR), augmented reality (AR), and immersive simulation technologies.
This position recognizes a leader with a national or international reputation in ophthalmic education with immersive technology. The Chair will guide Stritch School of Medicine in building a cuttingedge, missionaligned ecosystem for experiential learning that enhances diagnostic accuracy, clinical reasoning, surgical readiness, and compassionate patient care.
Key Responsibilities
Strategic Vision & Program Leadership
- Lead the development of a comprehensive VR/AR strategy for ophthalmology education across the undergraduate medical curriculum.
- Collaborate with basic science, clinical, and interprofessional programs to embed immersive ophthalmic learning longitudinally.
- Partner with Loyola Medicine, simulation centers, and community clinics to expand experiential learning opportunities in eye care.
Curriculum Innovation in Ophthalmology
- Design and implement VR/AR modules for core ophthalmic skills, including:
- Basic eye examination and interpretation
- Pupillary assessment and neuroophthalmic localization
- Visual field interpretation and optic nerve evaluatiom
- Develop assessment tools, competencybased evaluations using immersive technologies.
- Support faculty adoption through training, consultation, and bestpractice dissemination.
Research & Scholarship
- Conduct highimpact research in ophthalmic education, immersive learning, simulation science, or related fields.
- Secure external funding to support innovation, infrastructure, and interdisciplinary collaboration.
- Mentor faculty, residents, and students in scholarly work related to VR/AR and ophthalmology.
Technology, Infrastructure & Innovation
- Oversee development of immersive ophthalmology labs, VR/AR platforms, and digital ecosystems.
- Evaluate emerging technologies for scalability and alignment with Stritch's mission and accreditation standards.

This salary range is for a 12-month academic appointment. The salary offered to the selected candidate will be determined based on a range of factors including, but not limited to, the experience and qualifications of the selected candidate including years since terminal degree; training; field or discipline; budget availability; internal equity; and external market pay for comparable jobs. |
