What Your Job Will Be Like

Are you passionate about your work and want to join a dynamic team that solves challenging issues for the nation's security? If so, you could be the highly motivated Environment, Safety, and Health Technologist with a focus in Hazardous Waste Management (WM) we are seeking to join our team. You will play a key role in characterization, documentation, transportation, and shipment preparation of Class 1-9 hazardous and non-hazardous waste streams.

On any given day you may be called upon to:

  • Support the WM team with hazardous/non-hazardous waste characterization to include proper state and federal waste regulations.
  • Assist WM personnel in hazardous/non-hazardous waste collection from various research and development operations on site.
  • Team with the WM Program Lead to prepare waste streams for shipment. This includes transporting, proper waste segregation, packaging, and labeling waste containers for shipment.
  • Assist in the maintenance and upkeep of the site hazardous waste facility. This includes knowledge and understanding of the hazardous waste facility's Department of Toxic Substance Control Part B permit.
  • Be an on-site resource for hazardous waste spill response.
  • Perform sampling and analysis of various hazardous waste streams.
  • Assist WM Program Lead with hazardous waste project support.
  • Author WM procedures and maintain documentation systems.
  • Work with vendors and external contractors to support field service and to maintain programs.
  • Perform various Environment, Safety, and Health (ESH) work dependent upon department need. Work may include supporting radiological operations, providing ESH training to laboratory employees, OSHA based assessments, etc.
  • Perform indoor/outdoor field assessments to support site operations.

Due to the nature of the work, the selected applicant must be able to work onsite 100% of the time.

Salary Range

$88,900 - $171,900

*Salary range is estimated, and actual salary will be determined after consideration of the selected candidate's experience and qualifications, and application of any approved geographic salary differential.

Qualifications We Require

  • Bachelor's degree; or Associate's degree plus 4 years directly related experience; or high school diploma plus 8 years directly related experience
  • One of more of the following:
    • Hazardous waste handling and/or shipment experience
    • Current 40-hour HAZWOPER certification
  • Ability and willingness to don up to Level C PPE (to include full face respirator use, Tyvek suits, etc.)
  • Ability and willingness to enter confined spaces and work from heights
  • Ability to obtain and maintain a DOE Q-level security clearance
Qualifications We Desire

  • Experience with California Title 22 regulations
  • Hazardous waste spill response experience
  • Radiological worker
  • Experience operating a forklift (powered industrial truck)
  • Working knowledge of the methods, procedures, equipment, and techniques used to collect and analyze samples for evaluation of hazards
  • Strong customer service skills and ability to work well in a team focused environment
  • Experience with generating hazardous waste manifests
About Our Team

The Sandia California Occupational Health and Safety Department provides Environment, Safety, and Health support services to the California site. Support includes: Safety Engineering, Industrial Hygiene, Waste Management, Emergency Management, Radiological Safety.

NNSA Requirements for MedPEDs

If you have a Medical Portable Electronic Device (MedPED), such as a pacemaker, defibrillator, drug-releasing pump, hearing aids, or diagnostic equipment and other equipment for measuring, monitoring, and recording body functions such as heartbeat and brain waves, if employed by Sandia National Laboratories you may be required to comply with NNSA security requirements for MedPEDs.
