DEPARTMENT OVERVIEW

The External Engagement department at the University of California's systemwide headquarters in Oakland is seeking an energetic student who is passionate about social media, digital marketing, content creation, photography and videography for a paid internship with our social team this summer.

POSITION SUMMARY

In this position, you'll make fun and creative content across the University of California brand social media channels, with a focus on TikTok and Instagram Reels. Our goal is to tell more student stories, increase student engagement with our channels and create more content that is relevant and entertaining to students. We also wish to bring a student perspective to advocacy efforts and priority messaging of importance to the University.

The successful candidate will have a command of best practices and trends in social media and a demonstrated ability to create fun, engaging and sharable content. We are seeking a self-motivated worker and critical thinker, who is eager to experiment and measure the return on their effort. A passion for the University of California, its mission and values and the diversity of its student body is a must!

As part of the UCOP Social Media team, the intern will have the opportunity to learn the full lifecycle of brand marketing, collaborating with External Engagement colleagues across our editorial, multimedia, digital and design teams, as well as government relations. The Social Media Intern will get valuable, hands-on job experience within a fast-paced, professional marketing team, while playing a significant role in a large brand's social media strategy and making connections across the UC system.

Responsibilities

80% Social Media Content Ideation & Creation: Work with Social Media team to create engaging short-form video and static content to elevate the UC brand voice on the official University of California social media platforms. Pitch content ideas aligned with strategy and goals of the Social Media and broader UCOP External Engagement team, with an emphasis on TikTok and Instagram engagement. Bring a student perspective to communication topics of importance to the University and advise on ways to improve student reach and engagement. Adapt social media trends into on-brand content. Draft scripts, film and edit short video content for our channels. Connect with individual students, campus student groups and other student partners to showcase their work on our channels. Explore nearby campuses to show followers the UC system and local area around the universities. Find user generated content from across the UC system to share on our channels.

10% Social Media Reporting: Analyze metrics to evaluate performance. Provide updates/reports on follower numbers, channel performance and how UC campuses are engaging their followers. Monitor incoming mentions and comments on TikTok and Instagram.

10% Research & Planning: Keep up on trends across social media, including those pertinent to higher education, and pitch ideas to the team. Stay up to date on emerging social media platforms and make recommendations as to whether we should have a presence. Research keywords, hooks and algorithm triggers that should be applied to posts for greater reach and engagement. Maintain social media calendar. Work alongside, and collaborate with, other members of UCOP's External Engagement team.

Required Qualifications

  • Currently enrolled University of California student.
  • In-depth experience in a wide range of social media (personal or professional).
  • Knowledge-and skillful use-of social media platforms, including videography, editing, photography, memes, graphics, writing copy/captions, and effective use of keywords.
  • Highly creative with unique ideas and a sense of humor.
  • Motivated attitude and desire to learn and experiment with new forms of content.
  • Comfortable in front of a camera and doing voice-overs.
  • Strong pulse on social media trends and tools.
  • Ability to quickly learn relevant technology.
  • Interest in research and the ability to communicate complex ideas in clear, concise language.
  • Motivated attitude and desire to learn new functionality and platforms in social media.
  • Impeccable written communication skills, including copywriting and copy-editing.
  • Thrives in a fast-paced, team-centric environment.
  • Strong work ethic and able to work independently and deliver on deadline.
  • Ability to communicate and interact professionally and effectively with students, faculty, administrators and the general public.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Experience with basic video editing software, graphic design programs and Photoshop.
  • Experience with Canva a plus.
  • Familiarity with best practices relating to accessibility, or a willingness to learn.

Education

  • Currently enrolled UC student.
  • High school graduate and/or equivalent experience/training.

SALARY AND BENEFITS

Salary: $19.96 - $24.95 hourly commensurate with skills/experience. (30-40 hours per week)
