Primary Purpose of Organizational Unit
The Department of Geography is housed within the College of Arts & Sciences. It is a teaching and research department.
Position Summary
This position is for a research assistant for the Placed-Based Histories of Uniontown project, which aims to gain a greater understanding of African-American history in Uniontown, Alabama through place-based oral histories of civic and environmental justice from past to present. The goal is to assemble a collection of community member oral histories, particularly as they relate to the intersection of civil rights, environmental justice, and historical narratives of African-Americans in the region, and the ways they are organizing to protect what they value. Duties of the research assistant are: 1) transcribing oral history interviews, 2) formulating transcripts into draft narrative history profiles, 3) managing project communication and providing monthly updates to community partners, 4) support digital content creation of oral histories, and 5) conducting literature searches and writing an annotated bibliography and literature review, and 6) conducting thematic analysis and writing up and publishing study results. Remote or in-person work arrangements are suitable.
Minimum Education and Experience Requirements
Bachelor's degree in a discipline related to the area of assignment; or equivalent combination of training and experience. All degrees must be received from appropriately accredited institutions.
Management Preferences
Knowledge of qualitative research principles, study design, or methods for collecting data and data cleaning
Knowledge of qualitative data analysis software to analyze and report data.
