The compensation offered to the candidate selected for the position will depend on several factors, including the candidate's educational background, skills and professional experience.

Job Overview:

To meet the psychosocial needs of patient and families through the application of the principles and methods of music therapy. Develops and implements music therapy programs to meet the physical, emotional, mental, spiritual and environmental needs of patients and families throughout the children's hospital.

Qualifications:

  • Bachelor's degree in music therapy.

  • Board certification in Music Therapy (MT-BC) required upon hire or within 1 year of employment.

  • Completion of music therapy internship required

Preferred:

  • Experience in children's healthcare preferred.

  • Master's degree in music therapy preferred.

Essential Functions:

  • Offers and provides individual and group music therapy sessions to pediatric patients and families throughout the children's hospital based on daily psychosocial assessment and referrals from the child life and interdisciplinary staff.

  • Utilizes music therapy as a diagnostic and treatment tool to help children and families with adjustment to hospitalization, illness, treatment, etc.

  • Interprets the child's perception of his/her diagnosis and treatment as revealed through music and other means of communication both verbal and non-verbal.

  • Provides opportunities for and facilitates a variety of music therapy modalities to promote self healing, self-expression, understanding and mastery.

  • Prioritizes patient needs effectively and efficiently. Works collaboratively with the multidisciplinary team to assess needs and provides consultation to the child life staff and overall healthcare team regarding the status and individual needs of children to promote adaptation to hospitalization.

  • Demonstrates knowledge of the principles of growth and development. Assesses data reflective of the patient's status and interprets the appropriate information needed to identify each patient's requirements relative to his or her age-specific needs.

  • Applies the knowledge necessary to provide care appropriate to the age of the patients served on his or her assigned unit.

  • Provides the care needed as described in the department's policies and procedures.

  • Documents patient involvement in music therapy programming by keeping daily records of all interventions, charting on patients, and sharing pertinent information with staff.

  • Maintains overall record of patients seen on a yearly basis, providing statistics as needed and requested.

  • Communicates with Child Life Director/Coordinator including plans, activities, new ideas and administrative needs of specified unit/program. Participates in management and organization of music therapy supplies and equipment and use of activity centers.

  • Keeps self current in the field of music therapy by reading professional journals and attending lectures.

  • Maintains membership and participates in professional organizations.

  • Pursues opportunities for professional presentations.

  • Provides education and in-services to all members of the interdisciplinary team regarding music therapy.

  • Demonstrates interactions with staff members that are evident of team building.
