Summary

MSOE invites applications for a part-time Lab Assistant, Additive Manufacturing to join our Mechanical Engineering team. Under the direction of the Mechanical Engineering (ME) Department Chair, the Laboratory Assistant, Additive Manufacturing provides support for department laboratories and projects, with specific support to projects involving additive manufacturing and metrology. Responsibilities include assisting department faculty with assisting students and faculty with projects involving the use of additive manufacturing, maintenance of additive manufacturing equipment, and purchase of necessary supplies for additive manufacturing.

Essential Job Functions

  • Operate and maintain additive manufacturing equipment to support student and faculty projects in the department.
  • Provide additive manufacturing equipment demonstrations to students and faculty as needed.
  • Set up new additive manufacturing equipment as and when needed.
  • Work with EHS to ensure safety requirements are satisfied.
  • Procure supplies for additive manufacturing as and when needed.


Other Duties and Responsibilities

  • Assist faculty in setting up new additive manufacturing equipment and laboratories.
  • Recommend new equipment that may be needed for laboratory upgrades.
  • Assist students with projects as and when needed.


This list of duties and responsibilities is not all-inclusive and may be expanded to include other duties and responsibilities as management may deem necessary from time to time.

Qualifications

  • Bachelor's degree required and minimum of 2 years of experience with different kinds of additive manufacturing machines such as Fused Deposition Modeling (FDM), Selective Laser Sintering (SLS), etc.
  • In lieu of a Bachelor's Degree, a HS Diploma or higher and 5 or more years of experience with additive manufacturing technology and software tools will be considered.
  • Training and/or certification in additive manufacturing.
  • Ability to work with faculty, staff, and students.
  • Experience with modern software tools such as Solidworks, Geomagic, Creaform VX, etc.


Skills and Abilities

  • Ability to read and interpret documents such as operating instructions, safety rules, and procedure manuals.
  • Ability to write routine reports and correspondence. Ability to communicate effectively in written and oral form.
  • Ability to maintain a safe laboratory environment and implement safety rules.
  • Ability to apply common-sense understanding to carry out written or oral instructions.


Physical Demands

  • Required to maneuver equipment, and lift equipment and materials (less than 50 lbs.).
  • Good manual dexterity.


Work Environment

This job operates in an instructional laboratory environment with additive manufacturing and metrology equipment.
