Job Summary

Under the direction of a Radiologist, the Ultrasonographer performs comprehensive diagnostic ultrasound imaging for neonatal, pediatric, adolescent, and adult patient populations across multiple body planes. This role supports imaging services across Grady Health System, including the main hospital campus and the Grady freestanding emergency department.

Sonographic examinations include, but are not limited to, abdominal, vascular, non-pregnant pelvic, and small parts studies, producing high-quality diagnostic images to support accurate and timely clinical interpretation. The Ultrasonographer delivers patient-centered care essential to the imaging process, demonstrates sound clinical judgment in recognizing conditions requiring immediate intervention, and initiates appropriate life-support measures when indicated.

This position plays a critical role in optimizing patient flow, supporting timely study completion, and collaborating with multidisciplinary teams across inpatient and emergency care environments to ensure efficient, high-quality imaging services.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities
  • Perform diagnostic ultrasound examinations for inpatient, outpatient, and emergency department patients, including freestanding emergency care settings

  • Produce high-quality sonographic images in accordance with established protocols, regulatory standards, and physician requirements

  • Provide patient-centered care, ensuring patient safety, comfort, and dignity throughout all imaging procedures

  • Recognize abnormal findings or patient conditions requiring immediate clinical intervention and initiate appropriate life-support measures when indicated

  • Operate ultrasound equipment and related technologies effectively and safely

  • Support efficient patient flow and timely completion of imaging studies in high-volume and emergency environments

  • Accurately document procedures, findings, and patient interactions in PACS and the electronic medical record

  • Collaborate with radiologists, nursing staff, and multidisciplinary care teams to support coordinated patient care

  • Maintain compliance with licensure, certification, continuing education, and departmental policies

Minimum Qualifications
  • High School Diploma or GED

  • Successful completion of a one-year Diagnostic Medical Sonography program approved by the Commission on Accreditation of Allied Health Education Programs (CAAHEP)

  • Registered Diagnostic Medical Sonographer (RDMS) at time of hire in Abdomen or OB/GYN, with an 18-month contingency to obtain registration in both
    OR

  • American Registry of Radiologic Technologists (ARRT) Sonography (S) credential

  • Current American Heart Association (AHA) Basic Life Support (BLS) certification required prior to hire date

  • Proficiency in Metricide testing and demonstrated knowledge of ultrasound probe cleaning and sterilization processes

  • Must maintain all required certifications and continuing education in good standing

Preferred Qualifications
  • Experience using PACS and EPIC

  • Prior experience in emergency or high-acuity imaging environments

Work Environment & Schedule
  • Clinical imaging environment across hospital-based and freestanding emergency department settings

  • Schedule may include days, nights, weekends, holidays, or extended hours based on operational needs

Physical Requirements
  • Ability to stand, walk, bend, and position patients for extended periods

  • Ability to lift and move patients and equipment as required to perform imaging procedures
