Environmental Specialist

Huntsman is seeking an Environmental Specialist supporting the Environmental, Health, and Safety (EHS) Division located in Geismar, Louisiana. This position will report to the Environmental Manager, EHS Manager.

Job Scope

The Environmental Specialist is responsible for ensuring that the plant's operations comply with all applicable environmental regulations, specifically those related to underground injection wells, air emissions, water quality, and waste management and groundwater remediation. Under the mentorship and coaching of the Environmental Manager or a designated Senior Environmental Engineer, this role assists with managing the plant's environmental compliance programs and reporting, as well as interfacing with regulatory agencies to maintain compliance and avoid penalties.

In summary, as the Environmental Specialist, you will:

  • Administer and oversee the Underground Injection Control (UIC) Program for assigned facilities, ensuring compliance with EPA Class I Hazardous Waste well regulations and state rules.

  • Prepare UIC permit applications, renewals, and modifications.

  • Conduct technical reviews of geologic, hydrogeologic, and engineering data to assess injection well design, construction, and operational safety.

  • Perform field inspections of injection wells and groundwater systems to verify compliance with permits and environmental standards.

  • Oversee groundwater monitoring programs, including sampling, data interpretation, and reporting.

  • Investigate and respond to potential violations, spills, or system malfunctions, recommending corrective actions.

  • Prepare and submit technical reports, compliance documentation, and regulatory correspondence.

  • Collaborate with internal teams, consultants, and regulatory agencies to resolve technical and compliance issues.

  • Provide outreach and technical assistance to stakeholders on UIC and groundwater protection best practices.

  • Manage various testing activities of deep wells.

  • Assist with monitoring and managing the plant's air emissions to ensure compliance with federal, state, and local air quality regulations, including 40 CFR Parts 60, 61, 63, 68, and 82, and LAC 33:III.

  • Assist with preparing required air permit applications, performing emission calculations as necessary, preparing administrative amendments and variances, emissions inventories, and compliance reports to regulatory agencies.

  • Assist with managing applicable air permits, conducting periodic self-audits and field inspections of air programs, procedures, and equipment, and interfacing with applicable internal departments to ensure proper operation, maintenance, ongoing compliance, and compliance related to proposed capital projects.

  • Assist with ensuring compliance with water quality regulations, including the Clean Water Act (CWA), NPDES, and LPDES regulations.

  • Assist with managing the plant's wastewater discharge, stormwater runoff, and other water-related activities to ensure compliance with discharge permits and standards.

  • Assist with preparing necessary water quality reports and permit renewal applications, including the Louisiana Pollutant Discharge Elimination System (LPDES) and Biosolids permits.

  • Maintain and ensure compliance with required plans, including the Stormwater Pollution Prevention Plan (SWP3), Spill Prevention, Countermeasure, and Control Plans (SPCC-SPC), and CWA Hazardous Substances Facility Response Plan (FRP).

  • Interface with onsite Environmental Laboratory personnel to ensure compliance with LPDES sampling and analysis requirements.

  • Ensure that the plant's waste management practices comply with the Resource Conservation and Recovery Act (RCRA), underground injection control (deep wells), groundwater remediation, universal waste, used oil, and other relevant regulations.

  • Assist with overseeing the classification, storage, transportation, and disposal of hazardous and non-hazardous waste.

  • Document waste minimization efforts and ensure proper tracking and reporting of all waste streams.

  • Assist with preparing the annual hazardous waste report, permit renewal applications, financial assurance documents, groundwater corrective actions, and deep well analyses.

  • Interface with third-party waste management vendors, deep well-related vendors, and waste disposal carriers.

  • Serve as a point of contact with regulatory agencies (i.e., LDEQ, USEPA, LC&E (formerly LaDNR), etc.) regarding environmental compliance matters within areas of responsibility.

  • Assist with responding to inquiries, inspections, and enforcement actions from regulatory agencies and ensure timely and effective resolution of compliance issues.

  • Conduct regular internal environmental audits to assess compliance with air, water, and waste regulations.

  • Identify potential areas of non-compliance or improvement and assist with developing action plans to address these issues.

  • Assist with the coordination of external auditors and regulatory agencies during environmental inspections and audits.

  • Ensure that any findings from audits are addressed promptly and that corrective actions are implemented.

  • Develop and deliver environmental training programs focused on regulatory compliance to ensure that plant personnel understand their responsibilities and the importance of compliance.

  • Ensure that all relevant employees are trained on air, water, and waste management practices, as applicable.

  • Communicate updates on regulatory changes, compliance status, and environmental performance to the Environmental Manager.

  • Assist with fostering a culture of environmental responsibility and compliance awareness throughout the plant.

Qualifications

You must possess the below minimum qualifications to be initially considered for this position. Preferred qualifications are in addition to the minimum requirements and are considered a plus factor in identifying top candidates.

The candidate must have an unrestricted right to work for Huntsman in the United States.

Minimum Qualifications

Education required:

  • Bachelor's degree in Geology, Environmental Engineering, Environmental Sciences, Environmental Policy, or a related field.

  • 3+ years of experience in environmental science, engineering, or policy with a focus on regulatory compliance.

  • Experience with federal and state environmental regulations, particularly those related to air, water, and waste management.

Skills and Knowledge

  • In-depth understanding of environmental regulations, including CAA, CWA, LPDES, SDWA, RCRA, and other relevant laws.

  • Strong analytical skills with the ability to interpret complex regulations and data to make informed decisions.

  • Excellent communication skills, with the ability to effectively interface with regulatory agencies and plant personnel.

  • High level of attention to detail to ensure accuracy in reporting and compliance documentation.

  • Ability to work collaboratively with other departments to achieve environmental goals.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Geologist in Training (GIT), Certified Professional Geologist (CPG), Professional Engineer (PE) license, Registered Environmental Manager (REM), Qualified Environmental Professional (QEP), Certified Professional Environmental Auditor (CPEA), or equivalent certifications.

Working Environment

  • Ability to work in an industrial plant environment, including exposure to noise, heat, and various chemicals.

  • Ability to travel as required for regulatory meetings and training.

  • Ability to be on call (24/7) on a periodic basis for spill and release reporting purposes.
