Description

First Merchants Bank is seeking a Managing Director, Treasury Management Sales to join our team! This position is responsible for the strategy, performance, and execution of the bank's treasury management and merchant services sales organization. This leader drives transformational change, deposit growth, fee income, client acquisition, and product adoption across all commercial segments, ensuring the bank delivers a consistent, high-performing, client-centric sales experience. Acts as a catalyst for innovation in client experience, digital adoption, and market competitiveness while maintaining strong governance and risk management practices.

The Managing Director leads the treasury management and merchant sales directors and establishes the strategic direction for market coverage, sales performance, and talent development. This role is accountable for achieving sales targets, deepening partnership with commercial banking, and ensuring disciplined execution while effectively positioning treasury management and merchant services.

This is a highly visible leadership role requiring strong executive presence, commercial acumen, and the ability to translate strategy into performance that achieves sustained growth and exceptional client experience.

Essential Duties & Responsibilities:



  • Sales Leadership & Strategy

    • Develop and execute the enterprise-wide treasury management and merchant sales strategy across all commercial segments, markets, and industry verticals.
    • Set annual sales goals, pipeline expectations, and performance metrics for the sales organization.


  • Team Leadership & Development

    • Lead and develop treasury management and merchant sales directors and ensure they effectively coach, manage, and develop their sales teams.
    • Build a culture of accountability, consultative selling, product expertise, and disciplined execution.
    • Develop succession plans, talent pipelines, and career paths for sales officers, sales associates and relationship associates.


  • Business Growth & Results

    • Own P&L accountability treasury management and merchant sales performance and contribute to financial planning.
    • Drive achievement of all sales goals, including deposits, fee revenue, new client acquisitions, and product adoption.


  • Market Coverage & Go-to-Market Execution

    • Define and continuously refine market coverage strategies, territory assignments, and segmentation models.
    • Partner with treasury management product leadership to promote adoption of new products and enhancements.


  • Cross-Functional Partnership

    • Serve as the primary liaison between sales, the commercial bank, product, operations, risk, and marketing.


  • Client & Market Engagement

    • Develop relationships and visibility with top clients, prospects, and community partners to support large or strategic opportunities.
    • Monitor competitive landscape and emerging market needs; provide insights to product and executive leadership.
    • Represent the sales organization in enterprise initiatives, strategic planning sessions, and leadership forums.


  • Operational & Risk Management

    • Ensure sales activities follow regulatory requirements, internal controls, and risk guidelines.
    • Establish consistent processes for documentation, pricing approval, pipeline management, and contract execution.
    • Partner with treasury management leadership to resolve client escalations and systemic issues impacting the sales process.




To be successful in this position, we require the following:



  • Bachelor's degree.
  • A minimum of eight (8) years of treasury management sales leadership experience.


The following would be a plus:



  • Executive presence with ability to engage C-Suite stakeholders.
  • Proven ability to lead high-performing teams and deliver sustained sales growth.
  • Strong understanding of treasury management solutions, client needs, and commercial banking strategies.
  • Experience influencing strategy and driving transformational initiatives.
  • Proven track record of innovation in treasury management; pushes boundaries, challenges legacy processes, and accelerates modernization.
  • Demonstrated success leading multi-market teams in a regional or community banking environment.
  • Exceptional communication, influencing, and executive presentation skills.
  • Strong financial acumen, including understanding of deposit economics, pricing, and revenue drivers.
