Primary Responsibilities

Primary duties of HDR's Hydraulic Modeler include: 1) Planning, leading, and managing utility planning tasks, working with teams on various utility infrastructure planning and utility management service-related projects; 2) Delivering technical products that meet client expectations; 3) Preparing technical reports and master planning studies, which require developing and calibrating water, wastewater, recycled water and stormwater hydraulic models; performing GIS and geospatial data analysis and reviews; developing maps and figures; alternatives analysis; developing high level engineering calculations and cost estimates for proposed alternatives; identifying funding opportunities for projects and grant writing; system water quality, energy and operations optimization, and rehabilitation studies; developing capital improvement recommendations and plans; writing technical reports regarding findings and recommendations; collaborating with multiple teams and disciplines including but not limited to water resources, environmental, GIS, and AutoCAD; and preparing and delivering public presentations to communicate findings and recommendations to cities, towns, and utilities; and 4) Participating in local and national professional organization(s) and internal practice and professional discipline groups, and project teams and activities to continually improve standards and best practices.

Required Qualifications

  • A Master's Degree in Civil or Environmental Engineering or a closely related field and 5 years of experience in hydrodynamic or water quality modeling or a Bachelor's Degree in Civil or Environmental Engineering or a closely related field and 7 years of experience in hydrodynamic or water quality modeling.
  • Required experience must include experience in: hydraulic modeling; geospatial analysis using ArcGIS Pro; data analysis using Microsoft Excel, Power BI, and ArcGIS Pro; programming with Python; technical report writing; preparing engineering calculations and cost estimations; grant writing; coordinating with multiple teams or stakeholders; and public presentations to communicate findings and recommendations for projects.
  • Professional Engineer (PE) licensure required (from any US jurisdiction).
  • National travel to support Utility Management Services projects between 5% and 10% of time. 2 to 3 days per trip on average.
