Hiring Range

The University of California, Merced is required to provide a reasonable estimate of the compensation range for this role. This range takes into account the wide range of factors that are considered in making compensation decisions including but not limited to experience, skills, knowledge, abilities, education, licensure and certifications, and other business and organizational needs. It is not typical for an individual to be offered a salary at or near the top of the range for a position. Salary offers are determined based on final candidate qualifications and experience. The salary range the University reasonably expects to pay for this position is $143,168.00 - $281,904.00 (placement in range related to qualifications and years of experience).

About the Job

As a SHS Staff Physician provides clinical and educational services in support of the overall operation of the Student Health Center. Works independently and under general supervision, administers direct medical care, including diagnosis and treatment, to patients utilizing written protocols as guidelines. Individuals in this position must reflect a balance and understanding of both patient care needs and the efficient operation of the Student Health Center. This position works in collaboration with the Medical Director on issues of professional practice and performance. This position works with the Health Care Team on issues of efficiency, patient flow, teamwork, and patient satisfaction.

As the Head Team Physician, provides acute and continuity care to student athletes on and off the field and plays a vital role in coordinating care with a wide range of providers including athletic trainers and other members of the sports medicine program. Provides direct medical oversight of athletic training staff. Serves to develop and enhance clinical and educational services in support of intercollegiate athletics, club sports, athletic trainers and NCAA policy and procedures.

KEY RESPONSIBILITIES:

CLINICAL CARE STUDENT HEALTH SERVICES * In accordance with Standardized Procedures and consistent with community standards and UCM SHS Policies and Procedures. Provides direct patient primary care. Perform professional patient care medical services, as assigned. Examines and diagnoses patients. Prescribe and administer medical treatment. * Order examinations, analyses, x-rays, physical therapy, and prescription drugs. * Perform minor surgical procedures. * Provide continuing care of patients, obtain appropriate consultations and arrange appropriate transfers. * Provide pre- and post-operative primary care of surgical cases. * Provide patient education to support self-care and health maintenance. * Advocate preventative medicine and public health measures. * Review reports, records, and the general progress of patient clinical care. * Maintain patient records and reports according to professional standards of documentation required by the State, University, and H. Rajender Reddy Student Health Center including charting in a succinct, legible and accurate manner following the S-O-A-P format, charting in a timely fashion and charting that reflects the process of care, patient progress and current patient status. * Prepare reports and related correspondence regarding patient care and condition. * Respect and maintain confidentiality of patients and staff in all aspects of clinical care, documentation, and correspondence. * Documents on-going and significant problems on the Problem List. * Completes appropriate forms including, but not limited to, work-related injury forms, encounter forms, ancillary forms, and urgent care forms.

INTERCOLLEGIATE ATHLETICS - DIRECT CLINICAL CARE & MEDICAL OVERSIGHT * Provide comprehensive sports medicine evaluation, diagnosis, and treatment of illness and injuries for UC Merced students and intercollegiate athletes in sports medicine settings. * Provide consultation to SHS providers, athletic trainers, coaches and administrators as appropriate * Know roles of and work effectively with medical providers and experts who provide care and oversee safety and performance for intercollegiate student athletes (including but not limited to physicians, athletic trainers, strength, conditioning, and performance specialists) * Maintain complete medical records on student athletes, including records of pre-participation clearance, care of any illnesses or injuries sustained, results of medical referrals or diagnostic testing, and any follow-up care occurring on or off campus * As the Head Team Physician, serve as a recognized authority to independently direct medical care and make final treatment decisions for student-athletes, including making decisions regarding return to participation, and setting appropriate activity limitations for student athletes returning to partial participation * Participate in providing physician coverage for sports medicine clinics, training room coverage, practices, events, competitions, pre-participation physical, etc., as assigned * In collaboration with the Head Athletic Trainer, create and maintain policies and procedures in support of a Sports Medicine Policy and Procedures manual to maintain the highest quality of medical care, minimize risk, and support optimal health and development of student athletes * In collaboration with the Head Athletics Trainer, ensure all emergency action plans are up to date and implemented including EMS coverage * Ensure all required training and education is up to date for athletics personnel in collaboration with Athletics Compliance Staff * Develop and implement improved screening, prevention, and performance enhancement programs * Knowledge of NCAA and conference regulations, travel and sideline coverage and responsibilities as related to the team physician role * Provide medical consultation for drug testing procedures in accordance with approved policies and procedures set forth by regulatory agencies such as the NCAA, CCAA conference, etc * Knowledge and experience with the Health Insurance Portability and Accountability Act (HIPAA) regulations & the Family Educational Rights & Privacy Act (FERPA)

Rajender Reddy Health Center Medical Staff, including policies and procedures related to infection control and safety. * Maintains current medical license and CPR certification as well as appropriate skills for all approved clinical privileges. * Maintain current continuing medical evaluation certificates, DEA certification, and BLS certification. Maintains appropriate specialty qualifications and/or board certificates, as required. Provides documentation to SHS. * Organized and able to prioritize workload. * Assures timely patient care. * Keeps pace within appointment system and appropriate pace for drop-in patient load within the limits of available resources and within expected goals of productivity. * Contributes to productivity by demonstrating an ability to work efficiently. * Maintains communications and coordinates functions with staff. * Maintains a professional demeanor even when under pressure or difficult situations are encountered. * Demonstrates respect for co-workers by keeping a reasonably clean and well-organized work area. * Knowledgeable in emergency policies and procedures. * Knows emergency/disaster plan. * Knows use and location of emergency equipment at a level appropriate to the assigned unit. * Initiates basic CPR as needed. * Adheres to hours of work and payroll responsibilities. * Demonstrates flexibility in work schedules which may include evening and weekend shift assignment. * Other duties as assigned * Maintain or delegate responsibility for case management, continuity, and coordination of care in complex cases assigned by supervisor.

LEADERSHIP, CONSULTATIVE OVERSIGHT AND PROFESSIONAL GROWTH * As a medical professional, demonstrates an ability to communicate knowledge both formally and informally. * Collaborates with other disciplines in planning, developing, gathering, implementing, and evaluating patient education materials. * Attends and participates constructively in staff meetings. * Participates in SHS committees as assigned. * Participates in the development of standards, policies, and procedures essential to the delivery of quality medical, nursing, and preventative health care services. * Participates in the orientation of new employees. * Serves in a teaching capacity and resource person for the development of other health care workers, individual patients, volunteers, and groups. * Contributes to the professional development of Mid-Level Practitioner Practice. * Demonstrates and supports professionalism in nursing and Physician Assistant practice. * Assists in identifying mid-level practitioner staff educational needs and issues in their practice. Prepares professional literature to share with other clinical providers and/or appropriate staff. * Serves as a resource person for other nursing staff in the enhancement of basic .Serves as a resource person for other nursing staff in the enhancement of basic medical practice. * Contributes to, and participates in, Quality Assurance activities as needed. * Facilitates in problem-solving. Qualifications

  • Advanced degree Possession of the legal requirements for the practice of medicine in California as determined by the California Medical Board Required and Advanced degree Completion of ACGME-accredited residency training program; and
  • Advanced degree Completion of ACGME-accredited sports medicine fellowship program; and
  • 3 years of experience practicing in primary care sports medicine with most clinical activity directly in sports medicine, preferably with a university athletics department; and
  • Current DEA Certificate - Board Certification in sports medicine Required Board Certification in a primary care specialty (eg: Family Practice, Internal Medicine, Pediatrics), (required).
  • Requires knowledge and abilities essential to the successful performance of advanced Physician duties.
  • Advanced clinical skills.
  • Demonstrate and maintain current knowledge of applicable rules and standards of the Conference, the National Collegiate Athletic Association (NCAA), as well as other associations and agencies.
  • Ability to communicate with both patients and clinical staff members.
  • Effective diagnostic and decision-making skills in more difficult cases.
  • Ability to diagnose patient condition and make associated treatment recommendations.
  • Ability to work in a collaborative manner.
  • Experienced with electronic/medical records systems. Must be computer literate.
  • Experience supervising other health care professionals.
  • Experience in administration and policy development.
  • Experience in sports medicine leadership, preferably including a university athletics department (preferred).
  • Experience as team physician for either college, high school, Paralympic, Olympic, or professional teams (preferred).
  • Experience working within a college athletics program as a medical provider (preferred).
  • Experience in college student health (preferred).
  • Experience with sports ultrasound (preferred).
