You will be responsible for the operation, maintenance, and upgrade of critical systems such as HVAC, compressed air, chilled water, steam, and process ventilation. Additionally, you will drive the technical success of construction projects managed by the US Army Corps of Engineers (USACE) and Olin Winchester, guiding them from the Vendor Scope of Work (VSOW) phase through design review, construction QA/QC, and final commissioning.

Mechanical Engineer - Facilities Essential Job Functions

Construction & Capital Projects (Owner's Representative)

  • Develop Basis of Design (BOD) requirements and detailed Vendor Scopes of Work (VSOW) for the mechanical portion of facilitation projects to ensure alignment with operational needs.
  • Serve as the technical authority reviewing mechanical design packages developed by Architectural & Engineering (A&E) firms. Evaluate designs for technical feasibility, maintainability, and compliance with Unified Facilities Criteria (UFC) and DoD standards.
  • Provide on-site engineering support during the construction phase, including the review of material submittals and RFIs. Ensure contractors adhere to specifications and safety protocols.
  • Lead or witness commissioning activities for new mechanical infrastructure to ensure systems are integrated, balanced, and fully operational prior to turnover.

Facilities Operations & Maintenance

  • Design, operate, and maintain essential mechanical systems including industrial HVAC, high-pressure compressed air, process piping, and industrial ventilation to support ammunition production.
  • Perform inspections and root cause analysis (RCA) to proactively resolve mechanical failures, reduce downtime, and optimize preventive and predictive maintenance programs.
  • Partner with safety, production, and environmental teams to ensure all systems meet compliance requirements including OSHA, ATF, EPA, and DoD regulations specific to ammunition manufacturing.
  • Maintain up-to-date system drawings (P&IDs), standard operating procedures, and maintenance records.

Mechanical Engineer - Facilities Minimum Requirements

  • Bachelor's degree* in Mechanical or Aerospace Engineering.
  • 3+ years of experience in facilities engineering, or 3+ years in an A&E firm environment with a focus on industrial construction projects.
  • Demonstrated familiarity with all phases of a construction project (Design, Bid, Build, Commissioning) and experience reviewing A&E design sets.
  • Working knowledge of Unified Facilities Criteria (UFC) is highly preferred. Must be familiar with NFPA, ASHRAE, and OSHA codes, as well as ATF and DoD facility safety standards.
  • Professional Engineer (PE) license or an Engineer in Training (EIT) certification with relevant construction/A&E experience is preferred.
  • Proficiency in AutoCAD and/or Revit, CMMS (Maintenance Management Systems), and engineering documentation tools.
  • Strong problem-solving, technical writing (for SOWs), and project management skills.

Location-Specific Requirements:

  • Must possess a valid US Driver's License.
  • This position requires successful vetting as an Employee Possessor in accordance with U.S. Department of Justice and the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives.
  • This position requires access to ITAR controlled technical data, and as such, employment will be contingent upon the candidate's ability to access ITAR controlled technical data pursuant to an export license approved by the Directorate of Defense Trade Controls, if required.
  • This position requires successful vetting for unescorted access in accordance with U.S. Army and Department of Defense access policies. The US Government does not allow non-US citizens on-site at the Lake City Army Ammunition Plant. Therefore, to be considered in the hiring process, the candidate must be a US citizen.
