Loyola University Chicago is seeking an Assistant Professor of Theology to teach two credit-bearing courses per semester in applicant's field - viz., religion and Islam, in particular -amounting to approximately 5 hours per week in class; prepare course syllabuses, order texts, prepare lectures, student exercises and examinations; maintain office hours (at least 3 per week) for student advising; proctor student examinations; serve on at least 2 departmental committees, in addition to service to university; regular attendance at all departmental meetings; research and publication of original scholarship related to the field of religious studies and Islamic theology.
Qualifications
PhD in Islamic Studies, Religious Studies or a related field OR ABD (all but dissertation) in Islamic Studies Religious Studies or a related field. Prior experience must include: Design undergraduate-level courses in Islamic studies using primary and secondary sources from the field; Use native or near-native fluency in at least two languages of the Islamic intellectual tradition (such as Arabic, Persian, or Ottoman Turkish) to interpret primary-source texts; Conduct research using Arabic-language primary texts in Islamic theology, law, and mysticism; Conduct research using manuscript materials from libraries and archives in at least two languages of the Islamic intellectual tradition; Prepare peer-reviewed articles, book chapters, or monographs based on original analysis of primary-language and manuscript materials; Conduct comparative research using primary-language sources from Islamic and Judeo-Arabic intellectual traditions to interpret texts and analyze manuscript materials.

Additional Salary Information
This salary range is for a nine-month academic appointment. The salary offered to the selected candidate will be determined based on a range of factors including, but not limited to, the experience and qualifications of the selected candidate including years since terminal degree; training; field or discipline; budget availability; internal equity; and external market pay for comparable jobs. Salaries higher than the published maximums may be offered in limited circumstances.
