This role is for a mission modeler who can design and execute analyses of military operations to evaluate munitions, sensors, tactics, and kill-webs.

You will participate in and eventually lead technically rigorous studies, develop new analytic approaches, and translate complex simulation results into defensible insights for senior decision-makers.

Specific research-related activities expected of this position include:

Responsibilities

  • Independently identify and propose research efforts that address Department of War gaps and needs.
  • Design and execute mission-level studies using frameworks such as AFSIM or STORM.
  • Develop scalable analytic workflows to process and statistically interrogate simulation outputs.
  • Produce high-impact reports and briefings to technical and non-technical audiences.

Required Qualifications

  • Ph.D. in Engineering, Mathematics, Physics, Computer Science, or a closely related quantitative field with at least 3 years of relevant experience beyond academic work, or

  • Master's degree in one of the above fields with at least 6 years of relevant experience beyond academic work.

  • Demonstrated record of developing original analytic methods, applying statistical techniques to datasets, and delivering decision-relevant insights.

  • Proficiency in writing production-quality code in C++, Python, or MATLAB.

  • Ability to work independently and collaboratively in small, high-performing, research teams.

  • Strong technical communication skills.

  • Significant interest in Department of War issues and military operations.

  • Successful completion of a criminal background check is required.

  • Travel (domestic or international) may be required.

  • Ability to obtain and maintain a TS/SCI security clearance.

The following experience is not required but will strengthen an application:

Preferred Qualifications

  • Deep knowledge on one or more kill-web components (e.g., radar, weapon platforms, C2).
  • Experience developing AFSIM plugins.
  • Experience designing studies that influence operational concepts, requirements, or acquisition decisions.
  • Active TS/SCI security clearance

The Research Environment

IDA research staff work on problems that do not have predefined solutions. Successful analysts are:

  • Self-directed and intellectually curious.
  • Comfortable working across disciplines.
  • Able to contribute to multiple concurrent studies.
  • Motivated by quantitative, high-consequence, analysis.

You will work with peers who value methodological rigor, independence of thought, and technical excellence.
